William Muir Life

Sir William Muir, Order of the Star of India (27 April 1819 – July 1905) was a Scottish Orientalist and colonial administrator who served as Principal of Edinburgh and Lieutenant Governor of India's North-West Provinces.

Life

He was born in Glasgow, the son of William Muir (1783-1820), a merchant, and Helen Macfie (1784–1866). John Muir, the Indologist and Sanskrit scholar, was his older brother. He was educated at Kilmarnock Academy, Glasgow and Edinburgh's universities, and Haileybury College. He joined the Bengal civil service in 1837. Muir served as secretary to the governor of the North-West Provinces and as a member of the Agra revenue board, and during the Mutiny he was in charge of the intelligence service. He was appointed foreign secretary to the Indian Government in 1865. In 1867, Muir was knighted (K.C.I.). (ie, in 1868) and he became the lieutenant-governor of the North Western Provinces.

The British began to discuss famine policy during the Orissa famine of 1866, and Muir issued a note in 1868 that: ".

Muir was appointed financial representative of the Viceroy's Council in 1874 and resigned in 1876 when he became a member of the Council of India in London. James Thomason served as Muir's mentor in the Imperial administration; Muir later wrote an influential biography of Thomason.

Muir had always been interested in education, and it was primarily due to his efforts that the central college at Allahabad, known as Muir Central College, was established and endowed. Muir College later became a member of the Allahabad University. Muir was elected president of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1884. He was elected principal of the University of Edinburgh in 1885 in succession to Sir Alexander Grant and continued on until 1903, when he resigned.

He married Elizabeth Huntly (1822–1897), daughter of Cawnpore's collector, on February 7th, 1840. They had 15 children together. He died in Edinburgh and is buried in Dean Cemetery. The grave is on the lower terrace of the obscure lower level.
