William Reibert Mapother Jr. (born April 17, 1965) is an American actor best known for his role as Ethan Rom on the television series Lost and his role in the film In the Bedroom.
He is also known for the film Another Earth.
Personal life
Mapother was born in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of Louisa (née Riehm) and William Reibert Mapother Sr. (c.1938-2006). Between 1967 and 1970, his father worked as an advocate, bankruptcy specialist, and judge in Louisville. William Sr. died of lung cancer and pulmonary fibrosis on June 22, 2006. Mapother Jr. is the first cousin of actor Tom Cruise whose birth name is Thomas Cruise Mapother IV.
Career
Mapother has made a name for himself as a character actor and has occasionally performed scary or otherwise disturbing characters. He was a central figure in Todd Field's In the Bedroom and is perhaps best known as Ethan Rom in the television series Lost, in which he appeared for 11 episodes during the series's life.
Mapother has appeared in a number of independent films, including The Lather Effect, Moola, Hurt, and Another Earth. Mapother appeared in The Burrowers as a Native American soldier who accepts a posse to assist in the search for missing white settlers.
In September 2007, he was elected to a three-year term on the National Board of Directors for the Screen Actors Guild.
He has handled motion capture for Agent 47, the main character in the 2012 video game Hitman: Absolution, as well as providing the voice before series veteran David Bateson was recast. He appeared in the horror film The Atticus Institute in 2014, where he appeared as the lead.
