William Hung Life

William Hung (born January 13, 1983) is a Hong Kong-born American former singer who rose to fame in early 2004 after failing to audition Ricky Martin's hit song "She Bangs" on the third season of the television series American Idol. Hung was a civil engineering undergraduate at UC Berkeley at the time of his audition.

He inadvertently gained the love of many fans after his spirited audition to become the next American Idol.

Hung left university to pursue a musical career.

His recording career was marred by constant negative criticism, and his name became a point of much controversies as both he and his followers were suspected of promoting and endorsing racial stereotypes against Asians as he was portrayed as lacking musical ability and being acknowledged only for embodying these stereotypes. When he accepted a career as a technical crime analyst for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in 2011, he came to a conclusion about law enforcement rather than music.

Since then, Hung has reflected positively on his pop music career.

Personal life

Hung is a descendant of Confucius, who is 73 years old.

Hung and his family migrated to Van Nuys, California, at age 11, after growing up in the Sha Tin district of British Hong Kong. When he appeared on the US television contest series American Idol, he was a civil engineering student at University of California, Berkeley. He left college to pursue his music career and earned a mathematics degree from California State University, Northridge. Hung later earned an MBA from Marist College.

On June 18, 2014, Hung was married to Jian Teng. He had already gone through a divorce prior to his marriage. This second marriage ended in divorce.

William Hung Career

Career

Hung, a civil engineer at the University of California, Berkeley, auditioned for the third season of American Idol in San Francisco in September 2003, becoming the final auditioner on the show's January 15, 2004 version.

"I want to make music my life," Hung said before starting to perform and dancing to Ricky Martin's "She Bangs." Judge Simon Cowell dismissed Hung's appearance, saying, "You can't sing, you can't dance." So what do you want me to say? "Um, I already gave my best, and I have no regrets at all," Hung replied. Jackson and Abdul praised his upbeat mood, with Abdul remarking, "That's the best attitude yet." Hung's reaction to Cowell's remarks contrasts sharply with other contestants' often confrontational rejoinders. "You know, I have no formal education in singing and dancing," Hung said, prompting a mockery from Cowell, who responded, "No?" Well, this is the century's surprise. Hung was not accepted into the second round.

Following the eruption of a cult, Hungarian Hung rapidly established a following. In the first week, a William Hung fan website, run by realtor Don Chin and his wife Laura, received over four million hits. At a number of radio stations, remixes of Hung's audition show topped song request lists.

Hung later appeared on many television shows, including Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Entertainment Tonight, George Lopez, the late show with Keith Olbermann, The Howard Stern Radio Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Dateline NBC, Arrested Development, and CBS's The Early Show. He was featured in several national newspapers and newspapers, and he was parodied on Saturday Night Live, Mad TV, Celebrity Deathmatch, and The Fairly OddParents. He was reportedly invited to appear at MTV's Asia Awards in mid-February.

By late February, more than 100,000 signatures had been added to a petition to return Hung back to American Idol. Hung was brought back to American Idol as part of a mid-season special titled Uncut, Uncensored, and Untalented, which aired on March 1, 2004. The special chronicled what it was like to audition and, in Hung's case, became an inadvertent celebrity.

Hung was crowned the Artichoke King at the 2006 Artichoke Festival in Castroville, California; Marilyn Monroe had previously been honoured with the same award.

William Hung was given a $25,000 advance on a record contract with Koch Entertainment in 2004, and the company released three albums on that label in 2004 and 2005. Inspiration was the subject of his first album. It was produced by Giuseppe D. It was recorded over a weekend in March 2004 with Hung singing vocals over karaoke music. On April 6, Hung performed "She Bangs" during halftime at a Golden State Warriors basketball game on April 6 and included on the album as "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," in honor of the event. The album received largely critical feedback, but it eventually went on to sell almost 200,000 copies and reached Number One on Billboard's Top Independent Album Chart. Although a national advertising campaign including appearances on The Howard Stern Show and Miracle: Miracle in the Summer from William Hung (another karaoke covers album) only sold 7,000 copies, his two sequels were much less successful. In a February 2006 interview, he said he was recording on a fourth album of 5 or 6 tracks, but no one was released, and he quit in 2011.

Hung appeared in commercials for Ask.com, the Game Show Network (spoofing Freddie Mercury and performing an off-key "We Are the Champions"), as well as cell phone service provider Cingular Wireless. In May 2004, the Toronto Blue Jays' "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" was also performed by him.

Where is Mama's Boy (2004), his first film, a low-budget Hong Kong period comedy set in 2004, was released in January 2005. Hung was a good-natured village boy who sold Chinese pancakes to pay his mother's medical bills. His reputation is revealed as a guitarist, and he assists a woman in shielding her company from her envious, conniving older sister. With the song "Siu Beng" (Cantonese) ("Chinese Pancake"), an allusion to his American Idol audition song, "She Bangs," Hung performed opposite veteran Hong Kong actor Nancy Sit and parodied his own American Idol appearance (Chinese Pancake"), an allusion to his American Idol audition song "She Bangs" (Chinese Pancake). Despite strong financial support and Nancy Sit's participation, the film was a box office flop.

Hung later appeared in Airline, Arrested Development, and George Lopez, lampooning his own career.

Hung retired from performing in 2011 after becoming a technical crime analyst for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Hung is optimistic about his new career path, and he claims he does not regret that his music career has come to an end. "I showed that even the Average Joe could do well," he said about his brief time as a pop star.

In 2014, Hung joined the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. In 2017, Hung was invited as a motivational speaker for organizations such as the Asian Realtors Association of America; he has been hired as a keynote speaker.

On the American Idol season 15 finale, he made a surprise appearance of "She Bangs" on April 7, 2016.
