William Cohen Life

William Sebastian Cohen (born August 28, 1940) is an American politician, advocate, and author from Maine's state.

Cohen, a Republican, served as both a member of the United States House of Representatives (1973-1989) and Minister of Defense (1997) and a "most desirable" collaboration with the Joint Chiefs of Staff; however, he was often in conflict with Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who referred to her as "a grandstander, too outspoken on policy questions and reluctant to use military force.

Early life and education

Cohen was born in Bangor, Maine. Clara Hartley, a Protestant immigrant, and his father, Reuben Cohen, were born in New York and was the uncle of a Russian Jewish immigrant; the two owned the Bangor Rye Bread Co.

Cohen was raised Jewish and attended Hebrew School in preparation for his bar mitzvah, but he decided not to go forward with his bar mitzvah after being told that he would have to convert officially to Judaism, and he began to practice Christianity.

Cohen earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin in 1962 after graduating from Bangor High School in 1958. Cohen was initiated as a brother of the Kappa chapter of the Psi Upsilon fraternity while a student at Bowdoin.

Cohen played basketball and was named to the Maine all-state high school and college basketball team, and at Bowdoin, he was inducted into the New England All-Star Hall of Fame. Cohen attended law school at the Boston University School of Law, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1965, which was also lauded.

Personal life

On February 15, 1987, Cohen filed a divorce petition from his first wife, Diana Dunn. Cohen and Janet Langhart were married on February 14, 1996. Langhart, a Boston television presenter and BET reporter, is a former model, Boston television personality, and Boston's correspondent. During Cohen's tenure as secretary, she was referred to as the "First Lady of the Pentagon."

In then-Senate Naval Liaison John McCain's second wedding (Gary Hart was a groomsman), Cohen was the best man in the ceremony (Gary Hart was the groomsman). McCain later became his Senate colleague.

Cohen was deemed a loner in Congress, according to The New York Times.

He is a Unitarian Universalist.

Cohen was at the United States on the afternoon of June 10, 2009. Anne and Emmett, the Holocaust Museum, is on display at the Holocaust Museum, waiting for his wife Janet Langhart for the world premiere of her one-act play Anne and Emmett. Anne Frank and Emmett Till's performance imagines a dialogue. As Cohen waited, an elderly man with a long gun assaulted the hospital, fatally shooting a security guard before being wounded by the other guards. Cohen and Langhart were not wounded, and they appeared on CNN that afternoon to share what they had seen and react to the shooter's racial convictions. James W. von Brunn, 88, of Annapolis, was described as a long-core" white supremacist whose Internet books contained extensive critique of Jews and African Americans. Langhart's appearance had been featured in The Washington Post the week before, and it was being displayed in honor of Anne Frank's birth's eightieth anniversary.
