William Bronk Life

William Bronk (February 17, 1918 – February 22, 1999) was an American poet.

He received the National Book Award for Poetry (1981) for his book Life Supports (1981). He was also a veteran of World War II and a businessman.

After teaching at Union College for a short time, he took over Bronk Coal and Lumber after his father's early death.

In Hudson Falls, New York, he served for 30 years.

Life and work

William Bronk was born in 1918 in a house on Lower Main Street in Fort Edward, New York. Sherman, his older brother, who died young, and Jane and Betty, two older sisters. Their mother, a homemaker, and their father, Bronk Coal and Lumber, was a struggling business in Hudson Falls. The children all attended local public schools. Bronk was admitted to Dartmouth College for higher education at the age of 16. For another semester, he took graduate classes at Harvard University. "I couldn't take any more of this," he said later.

After World War II, Bronk was sent into the Army shortly after. He was accepted into OCS and was appointed as an officer after completing the course. In October 1945, he was honorably discharged from the Army.

At Union College in Schenectady, New York, he first taught English. In June 1946, he left Union and returned to Hudson Falls. He began working on The Brother in Elysium during the latter half of 1946. Bronk took over the Bronk Coal and Lumber Company, which he had inherited in 1941 after his father died unexpectedly in January 1947. Despite the fact that he intended this work to be temporary, he managed the company for 30 years, eventually retiring in 1978.

The poems appeared in Bronk's mind while going through the day's work. When one was ready, he wrote it on paper, rather than on a typewriter. As his manuscripts reveal, he seldom rewrote or modified a poem after it was written on paper.

William Bronk died on Monday, February 22, 1999.
