Career
Atherton was a hit on Broadway right away after graduating and working with several of the country's top playwrights, including David Rabe, John Guare, and Arthur Miller, who has received numerous awards for his performances on and off Broadway.
In The Sugarland Express (1974), Steven Spielberg's first film debut, he got his big break playing hapless fugitive Clovis Poplin. He appeared in major dark dramas including The Day of the Locust (1975) and Mr. Goodbar (1977), as well as the big-budget disaster film The Hindenburg (1975). Jim Lloyd, a cowboy from Centennial (1978), was also based on James Michener's book Atherton's Centennial (1978). Walter Peck, the EPA agent, appeared in the comedy Ghostbusters (1984).
