Willam Belli Career

Career

Belli's first acting work appeared on two episodes of The District (2002), and his first television appearance was on the game show Street Smarts. He appeared in The District, Boston Public, Cold Case, My Name Is Earl, My Name Is Earl, My Name Is Earl, and most notably as the transgender character Cherry Peck. He would continue to appear in few television shows during the 2000s and on some television shows. He also appeared in the film American Wedding for a small amount.

Belli was featured on Rilo Kiley's single artwork for the song "Breakin' Up" in 2008. He also modeled at the Machine Project, which was shot by Austin Young.

Belli is a member of the band Tranzkuntinental, which made its debut at The Roxy in 2009. Charlie Paulson and Xander Smith formed the band, but it also includes drag queens Detox, Kelly Mantle, Rhea Litré, and Vicky Vox.

He was featured in Rihanna's music video "S&M" in January 2011, as back-up dancers alongside Detox and Morgan McMichaels.

Willam's boss contacted him and asked him to audition for the fourth season of RuPaul's Drag Race. Belli was one of 13 contestants competing on the fourth season of Logo TV in November 2011. Chad Michaels, a fellow cast member, had competed with Belli in the California Entertainer of the Year Pageant in 2010. Belli did well in the episodes "Float Your Boat" and "Frenemies," but was disqualified in the latter. Belli's disqualification was due to his husband's conjugal visits in his hotel room, which was explained in the episode "Reunited." Willam has debunked the "official tale" in multiple interviews, according to Belli's own account in the years since airing season 4.

Belli's most recent reassertion is in an interview with YouTuber Joseph Shepherd in February 2019, where Belli claims that the'so-called' official motive was simply a lie perpetrated by the show's designers for the sole purpose of presenting a more palatable scenario of Belli's departure from the series. Willam said in that interview that the real reason for his removal was due to rising hostilities and crew conflicts. Despite all the crew having cards with the photographs of the queens/contestants (in and out of drag), worn around their necks, Willam claims that many of the crew members were impatient and condescending toward the drag queens in general, with some of the crew members not even bothering to find the contestants' names - "La-something" in the example. The queens were able to identify some of the crew's nefarious habits, as well as some of the crew's intercourses as racist.

Willam also claimed that the queens weren't properly fed outside of filming hours, for example, noting that $75 was all that was planned to feed the 12 contestants. Willam also claims that this necessitated visits to the supermarket for food etc. Willam also admitted that he regularly got other contestants up and/or inebriated, as well as attempting to steal stuff from the set, things feather enthusiasts, and RuPaul branded Iron fist shoes. According to Belli, the conjugal visit story was made up by the designers and Willam decided to "go along with the excuse" so that "everyone looked fine." Belli released his single "Chow Down," a parody of Wilson Phillips' "Hold On" that addressed the 2012 Chick-fil-A same-sex marriage scandal. Detox and Vicky Vox appeared on the album.

He released his first single "Trouble," which was produced by RuPaul's Red Hot collaborator Tom Trujillo on March 12, 2012. Chi Chi LaRue, a pornographer, produced the music video for the song, which premiered on Logo TV. Belli released "The Vain Song," a parody of "Billionaire" starring Bruno Mars as his third single and first posted on YouTube in 2010. Michael Serrato, who also produced Belli's music video for "Chow Down," directed the music video.

On April 29, 2012, Belli released "Love You Like a Big Schlong," a viral hit that has been watched more than a million times on YouTube alone. Selena Gomez & the Scene co-produced the song "Love You Like a Love Song" by Uncle Slam. During a segment of the 2012 NewNowNext Awards, Belli's loss to Eden Wood in a lip syncing competition was influenced by the song.

Belli was on a cover of Tammy Wynette's "Stand by Your Man" in November 2012. Belli's debut album The Wreckoning appeared on his website in the same month.

Belli started "Willam's Beatdown" on YouTube in December 2012, which was the result of a December 2012 subscription to the stylishvids. The series, which includes insult humor and video analysis, will eventually be renewed for a second, third, fifth, and sixth season, which then premiered on Belli's self-titled channel. Belli's biggest viral hit, with 20 million views on YouTube alone, will be released in January 2013 when he introduced "Boy Is a Bottom" starring Detox and Vicky Vox in celebration of RuPaul's Drag Race's fifth season premiere. Its timing and social media made it a very well-received debut. The song is a parody of Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire" and also features En Vogue's modified "breakdown" version. On Billboard's Comedy Digital Songs, "Boy Is a Bottom" debuted at number six, grossing 3,000 copies in the first week.

In Lady Gaga's lyric video for her single "Applause," Belli appeared alongside Shangela, Detox, Raven, Morgan McMichaels, Landon Cider, Shannel, and the Courtney Act on August 14, 2013.

Belli's trio, which included Detox and Vicky Vox, called DWV, officially separated in June 2014 due to a personal feud among the members.

Belli then became an American Apparel Ad Girl with Drag Race alumni Courtney Act and Alaska Thunderfuck 5000, which they also sponsored with a single named "American Apparel Ad Girls." "Dear Santa, Bring Me a Man" was also released as a Christmas single by the pair.

He released "Es Una Pasiva," a single version of the DWV hit "Boy Is a Bottom" in Spanish, which went on to top the comedy iTunes charts on January 13, 2017. On June 2, Belli self-released his sophomore studio album, Shartistry in Motion.

Belli's first book Suck Less: Where There's a Way in October 2016 Grand Central Publishing published Suck Less: Where There's a Willam, There's a Way. He launched his first perfume collaboration with Xyrena, Scented by Willam in 2017.

Belli had ordered a talk show to be hosted by Fullscreen on May 18, 2017. Suck Less, billed as a "where Willam throws shade and tells how to slay the game of life in six-inch stilettos," on a weekly half-hour call-in show, is set to premiere in the summer. Throughout the 13-episode series, friends from Belli's daily life, as well as some of his favorite drag queens, are likely to appear in guest appearances.

Willam appeared in the critically acclaimed film A Star Is Born in 2018. As Willam and fellow drag queen Shangela discover a drag bar alongside Lady Gaga's character Ally, she's discovered by well-known country singer Jackson Maine played by Bradley Cooper. Emerald, Willam's character, is a Dolly Parton impersonator who flirts with Jackson. The dialogue in his scenes was mainly improvised, with a memorable scene in which his protagonist has Jackson autograph her silicone breastplate. Willam and Shangela "blew his mind" with their ad-libbing, according to Bradley Cooper, who also produced the film.

On July 18, 2018, the first episode of Belli's Drag Race-themed podcast co-hosted with Alaska Thunderfuck and Race Chaser was released on the Forever Dog Network. To cross "the past, present, and future of LGBTQ+ entertainment," Alaska and Willam announced that they would build their own podcast network in partnership with Forever Dog, Moguls of Media (MOM). The Chop, hosted by Latrice Royale and Manila; Hello Jinkx, hosted by Delta Work and Raja; Popular This Week, hosted by Shea Couleé; and Hall & Closet, hosted by Jaida Essence Hall and Heidi N Closet, are podcasts produced by Willam and Alaska.

Belli introduced Suck Less Face & Body, Belli's own makeup line, in 2019. A panel of judges from New York magazine named her ninth on their list of "America's most influential drag queens" in June 2019, a list of 100 former Drag Race champions.

Belli was born into Iconic Justice, a courtroom display in which Belli will hear and decide on various legal and social issues affecting LGBTQ people in 2021.
