Wiley Life

Richard Kylea Cowie Jr. (born 19 January 1979 in London) is a British grime singer, songwriter, DJ, and record producer from Bow, East London.

He is often described as a key figure in the development of grime music and is often described as the "Godfather of Grime."

He released a series of highly influential eskibeat instrumentals on white label vinyl in the early 2000s, most notable of which was the first in the series "Eskimo" and rose to prominence as a tume MC both for his solo work and for footage shared with his crew Roll Deep. Wiley's first experience as a member of the UK garage band Pay As U Go, with whom he appeared on "Champagne Dance" in 2001, was a hit.

Wiley has continued to produce grime music while still releasing mainstream singles, such as "Wearing My Rolex," "Never Be Your Woman" and his UK number-one "Heatwave," among others.

"Godfather," Wiley's eleventh album, debuted at number nine on the UK Albums Chart, becoming his highest-charting album of his career, and also received an "Outstanding Contribution to Music" award from NME. Wiley is considered a pioneer in the British underground music scene, with a high work rate and a versatile musician with many crossover hits.

In the 2018 New Year Honours for services to music, he was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Early life

Richard Kylea Cowie Jr. was born in Bow, East London, on January 19, 1979. He is of Trinidadian and Antiguan descent. Richard Cowie Senior, Cowie's father, was a reggae performer from Cowie's youth and introduced Cowie to early hip hop, like The Sugarhill Gang. Cowie's love for music began when his father introduced him to the drums. As a boy with his dad, Cowie rode around London before heading to Chatham, Kent, to live with his grandmother when he was ten years old. "I just wanted to go and live with my dad," Cowie said about a year in Chatham. "I felt abandoned." When Cowie was eleven years old, he returned to Bow to live with his father.

As Cowie was a teenager in the early 1990s, he began selling crack cocaine and opium. Cowie was introduced to heroin selling by a DJ friend who was making a lot of money at the time. When a local drug store that was much older than him began to threaten him and his neighbor, Cowie stopped selling heroin. After deciding not to sell drugs as an alternative way to earn money, Cowie started recording music. Cowie began playing as a DJ and eventually began rapping, mixing garage music and drum and bass into his produced instruments, which culminated in the creation of the first ever grime beats, such as "Eskimo," which was released in 1999 or 2000. He broadcast his shows on pirate radio stations like Rinse FM. Wiley started using the word DJ Wildchild before a woman from Kool FM began using the word Wildchild herself and defobeyed Wiley in popularity. As a result, he changed his name to Wiley Kat, a reference to a Thundercats character, and later Wiley.

Although Cowie stopped selling drugs, he was still affiliated with felony gangs and with others involved in criminal investigations. Wiley became embroiled in several situations that were life-threatening, which resulted in their involvement in many situations. Following a drug swap, Cowie's friend had solicited money from someone but the money never was paid, but then Cowie argued with the individual who owed his friend money and then Cowie was ambushed when attending a performance. Because of the confrontation, Cowie was stabbed seven times. Several weeks later, the same people assaulted Cowie outside a sports retail store, resulting in Cowie's almost death in a hospital in Hammersmith. More than 20 times in his lifetime, Cowie has been wounded in a variety of other life-threatening situations, including being chased by a man with a samurai sword and being shot at with shotguns.

Personal life

Cowie has two children. Cadell's younger half-brother Cadell is also a grime painter. Tottenham Hotspur is a footballer who plays for England. Wiley's name is derived from the Thundercats cartoon character 'Wiley Kat,' a word he used for a brief period of time.

On several occasions, Wiley has been stabbed. A scar on his left hand side of his face appeared after one of his stab wounds in 2008. He had claimed to be slashed in the face three days before the shooting of "Wearing My Rolex" was fired, but the scar on his face ruined his confidence and self-confidence for a while as he did not want to turn up to interviews or music videos.

Eskiboy, Wiley's autobiography, was released in November 2017.

Wiley Career

Music career

Wiley appeared on pirate radio stations such as Rinse FM and drum and bass stations as a youth. Wiley went from SS Crew to The Ladies Hit Squad, a garage crew with DJ Target and MC Maxwell D. They soon decided to unite with rival crew Pay As U Go, as well as DJ Slimee, DJ Geeneus, and MCs Major Ace and Plague A Lero from Brown Brothers, who Wiley occasionally deejayed for. God's Gift From Deck Collecters Crew, Flow Dan and Riko Dan followed shortly. With "Champagne Dance," the group made a top-ten hit in 2002. In 2000, Wiley received acclaim for his UK garage record "Nicole's Groove," which he created under the stage name Phaze One.

After Pay As U Go disbanded, Wiley joined the Roll Deep entourage, which included Dizzee Rascal and Tinchy Stryder. They moved away from a traditional British garage sound and into a genre that would be described as gruesome.

Wiley began releasing instrumental singles on his Wiley Kat Recordings label from 2001 to "Snowman" and "Eskimo," "Avalanche," "Ice Rink" and "Snowman." These culminated in a solo record contract with XL Recordings.

On Thin Ice on XL, Wiley released his debut album, Treddin'. "Wot Do U Call It?" the album's singles include "Wot Do U Call It." "Pies" is a film that asks what name should be given to his music. "Wot Do U Call It?" Wiley's use of the Korg Triton. The synthesizer was used to solidify the formula as a Grime staple. Many studies, including those by Pitchfork Media, compared Wiley and his former labelmate Dizzee Rascal, who had achieved success with Boy in Da Corner the previous year, referred to them. Wiley's "comically polarized" fanbase had increased, according to Alexis Petridis of The Guardian; "at one end, its sonic experiments attracted the kind of people who run music blogs"; [where] long essays were published on topics such as Humean and Kantian perceptions of motivation in Bonnie Prince Billy's lyrics. On the other hand, inner-city teenagers who appear to be largely in an impenetrable mixture of street slang and patois."

Wiley used to refer to his music as "eski," a term he used to describe grime. Also, Wiley released mixtapes under the name 'Eskiboy.' He referred to his choice of name for his music and the revolving theme in his album and album names, including Treddin' on Thin Ice, partially because he likes the wintertime but mainly because it is cold in spirit. Wiley was portrayed in connection with his chilly theme: a cold theme, perhaps.

Several of Wiley's early vinyl releases, such as "Eskimo," were released under the alias "Wiley Kat"; this name was taken from a character from the cartoon Thundercats. However, Wiley's "Kat" is no longer used in official Wiley's tracks, only being mentioned vaguely in some of his songs.

Wiley's second album, Da 2nd Phaze, was released by Boy Better Know in 2006. The collection features 20 songs compiled by Wiley from the past three years, including exclusive bonus tracks from Gods Gift, Alex Mills, and More Fire Crew.

This was followed by Wiley's third album, Playtime is Over, which was released on Big Dada Records in 2007, an album that descended on his eskibeat roots. The Perpetuity Music Group controls Wiley's eskibeat and solo tracks. Maths + English, Dizzee Rascal's third album, was released on the same day as Dizzee Rascal's third album, Maths + English, and it features a track "Letter 2 Dizzee" that calls for the end of his feud with Dizzee Rascal's feud with Dizzee.

Wiley's hit single, "Wearing My Rolex," achieved mainstream chart success in May 2008. The instrumentation, as well as the slower, house style beat, and a lack of sub bass, all sparked controversy in the grime scene, as Wiley had previously promised that he would never change his sound to break into the mainstream. Wiley's fourth album, Grime Wave, was described by The Times as a "very pre-Rolex album." The scene's harsh, bass-heavy rhythms are very embedded in its roots, which are firmly rooted in the scene's harsh, bass-heavy rhythms. In October 2008, his fifth studio album, See Clear Now, followed his mainstream hits "Wearing My Rolex," "Cash in My Pocket," and "Summertime." Wiley is now a mainstream company. Despite the album's success, Wiley has disowned it as he was "very upset" with Asylum, about the production, but also unhappy with his current manager. The Wiley name was later changed to Wiley.

Wiley's sixth studio album, Race Against Time, was released on his own label. On Eskibeat Recordings, where he had far more creative control, this was released eight months after his previous album was out in June 2009. The collection includes Boy Better Know's 2009 hit "Too Many Guys" on the album.

Wiley's Twitter page on 2010 featured 11 zip files of old and unreleased music, as well as tracks from his forthcoming album The Elusive.

Wiley was first to be featured on Mark Ronson's "Record Collection," which also featured Simon Le Bon from the album of the same name. The song appeared on FIFA 11's soundtrack.

Wiley launched Offload Volume 01 on iTunes on March 4, 2011. It did not get a physical release, and some supporters had it down for free on the zip files, but some tracks were already released for free on the zip files. The album included several songs starring Wiley's crew A-List as well as the track "Yo Riley." Giggs and Juelz Santana appeared in a song called "Bright Lights" on March 6, 2011. Run the Riddim Selecta, Wiley's ninth studio album, was released on March 9, 2011. On Launchpad Records, Offload Volume 01, "Bright Lights," and Run the Riddim Selecta were among the Launchpad Selecta's. 100% Publishing, Wiley's seventh studio album, was released on the record label Big Dada and charted in the UK Albums Chart at number 76.

Wiley released Chill Out Zone, an independent EP for digital download on July 8, 2011. In May 2011, EP singles "Seduction" and "If I Could" were released, as well as "If I Could" and "If I Could."

Wiley's radio version of "Link Up" on iTunes, his first single from his eighth studio album, Evolve or Be Extinct, was released on January 25, 2011. Nana Rogues' "Link Up" single was released in September 2011, and the official "Link Up" single was released.

On his 33rd birthday in January 2012, he released Evolve or Be Extinct, his eighth studio album. On the UK Albums Chart, it reached number 86. On Valentine's Day, Roll Deep member Manga appeared in "Hottie" as a separate promotional track. Wiley began releasing grime freestyles over grime beats and releasing them for free on Twitter. "Step 1," "Step 2," and others were among the series's names that were released chronologically. All of the freestyles were created and published as a mixtape titled It's All Fun and Games Till, Vol. 1. Several other promo songs were also released, as well as working on his "Step" freestyles. Warner Music Group's continued support for his music has earned him the attention of a major record label Warner Music Group. Wiley continued with his "Step" freestyles, in honor of the unveiling of Vol. It's all fun and games till.

Wiley released his summer single "Heatwave," starring Ms D and produced by Rymez to British radio, in June 2012. The song gained over 2 million hits in less than two weeks. "Heatwave" debuted at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart on August 5, 2012, making this Wiley's first solo number 1 on the charts, selling 114,000 copies. Wiley revealed in an interview with the Official Chart Show that he would have more singles and a new album in the coming months. His next single, "Can You Hear Me," starring Skepta, JME, and Ms D. was announced in late August and was released in October 2012. The song was renamed to "Can You Hear Me (Ayaya)" and premiered on DJ Target's BBC Radio 1Xtra show on August 24.

On Twitter, Wiley revealed that Hands in the Air, his third single off his forthcoming album, will be released on September 13th, 2012. Emeli Sandé was the original performer on the album. However, Wiley later revealed that Rita Ora would replace Tulisa in his next film. The Ascent's name was revealed on September 27th, a new edition of the album. The album's tracklist was revealed on Instagram on October 11th, displaying 16 tracks. Wiley also said on October 11th that he no longer wanted to do at universities and student unions, citing professional concerns and saying that he had better things to do." Despite this, Wiley attended a club night at SUSU's University of Southampton Students' Union on January 25th, 2013 as part of the Ministry of Sound Raveout tour. Wiley also expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance on Twitter, saying, "a responsible crowd would [have] loved it tbh and tbf."

Following a controversy over The Ascent, Wiley revealed that he was leaving his record company Warner on April 4, 2013. "My label is doing 'Lights On' next,' admitting to being dissatisfied with their pick of a new single from the record, but I don't want that so you won't see me in the video."

Over 2,000 Wiley followers signed a petition on October 11, 2013, which was handed over to Tower Hamlets' mayor Lutfur Rahman, demanding that a monument to the artist be unveiled in Bow.

At the MOBO Awards' 18th Anniversary in October 2013, Wiley was named "Best Male" on October 19th.

In 2013, Wiley began recording Snakes & Ladders, his tenth studio album. "Flyin" was his first single from the album, and his track list for the album was leaked in August 2013. However, he later announced his intention to scrap the record and restart again as he was dissatisfied with it, saying that it "needs to be epic or there's no point." Big Dada's first single, "On A Level," was released on September 25, 2014. Wiley appeared on Ay Yawo What later in 2014, and "Chasing the Artist" was released as a non-album track on Ay Yeah Yeah.

Wiley announced in March that he would debut Godfather, his 11th studio album, and that the album would include 16 tracks, three of which would be released as singles. The album was released on January 13, 2017. The album debuted on the UK Albums Chart at number nine, becoming Wiley's highest-charting album of his career. Wiley received the NME's "Outstanding Contribution to Music" award on February 16, 2017.

Wiley's next album, Godfather II, was announced in late 2017. "I Call the Shots," Jme's first single, was released on November 3, 2017, along with the album's pre-order and track listing. The album was released on April 27, 2018.

Idris Elba, Stefflon Don, and Sean Paul appeared on "Boasty" in January 2019. The song was one of the year's biggest dancehall debuts.

Godfather III will be released on November 2nd, according to Wiley. The album was eventually available on streaming services on June 5, 2020, following delays.

Wiley's 14th studio album, Boasty Gang – The Album, was released on June 22, 2020. "Boosty" is the album's solo version of his hit song.
