Shon Seung-wan (born February 21, 1994), known professionally as Wendy, is a South Korean singer.

She is a member of the South Korean girl group Red Velvet.

Personal life

On December 25, 2019, Wendy was involved in a stage accident during her solo stage rehearsal at the 2019 SBS Gayo Daejeon. Due to the alleged lack of common safety measures by the show's crew members in the stage design, in addition to the lift stairs not being in place for the performance, she fell approximately 2.5 metres (8.2 ft). Her injuries included a pelvic fracture, a broken wrist and several facial injuries including a cracked cheekbone, with all injuries on the right side of her body. The accident and subsequent hospitalisation led to cancellation of all her planned activities In February 2020, Wendy was discharged from hospital after spending two months recovering, and began outpatient treatment. She made her comeback on January 1, 2021, at SMTOWN Live Culture Humanity.

Life and career

Wendy was born in Seongbuk-dong, a neighborhood in Seoul's Seongbuk District, South Korea, on February 21, 1994. Wendy came from a family of music enthusiasts, and she exhibited a keen interest in becoming a singer when she was only six years old. In addition to her love for singing, she is also able to play several instruments, including the piano, guitar, flute, and saxophone.

She lived in Jecheon until her fifth year of primary school, before heading to Canada with her older sister, Shon Seung-hee, to study abroad. She lived in Brockville, Ontario, before moving to the United States to attend Shattuck-Saint Mary's in Faribault, Minnesota, where she earned multiple awards for academics and music-related activities. There, she began using the word 'Wendy Shon' in English. She later attended Richmond Hill High School in Richmond Hill, Ontario, where she was a member of Vocal Fusion, the school's show choir. She became fluent in English and later learned to speak both French and Spanish.

Her parents were initially opposed to her pursueing a career in music and wanted her to concentrate on her education, but her parents eventually encouraged her to audition for South Korea as a singer.

In 2010, she registered with Cube Entertainment for an online audition for Koreaboo's Global Auditions. Despite being not the final winner, she was one of fifteen finalists chosen by Korean singer G.NA and Koreaboo from over 5,000 videos to advance to the final round in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and the first solo showcase for G.NA's first solo performance. Wendy once auditioned for the company in 2018, but was not accepted.

Wendy did not set out to audition for SM Entertainment at the time, but she was hired by the organization when she accompanied a friend to the S.M. In 2012, the world Audition Association in Canada reached its peak. Kim Gun-mo's "Moon of Seoul" resurfaced and was postponed. She attended for less than two years before being accepted as a S.M. member. On March 14, 2014, the predebut group SM Rookies debuted in entertainment. Wendy performed "Because I Love You" for the Mnet drama Mimi's soundtrack and appeared in the song's music video as part of SM Rookies.

Wendy made her official debut as a member of Red Velvet on August 1, 2014.

Wendy worked with rapper Yuk Jidam on the album "Return," which is part of KBS2's Who Are You: School 2015's Who Are You? The album was released on June 8, 2015, and it debuted at number 31 on the Gaon Digital Chart, ranking 31. On October 16, she released another song called "Let You Know" on the JTBC's D-Day soundtrack.

Wendy became a long-serving panelist on We Got Married in January 2016 and competed in King of Mask Singer as a contestant under the alias "Space Beauty Maetel" in the form of "Space Beauty Maetel." As part of SM Entertainment's SM Station initiative, she collaborated with Eric Nam on a duet titled "Spring Love" in March 2016. On the Korea's Gaon Digital Chart, the song ranked 7nd on the top chart. Wendy and her Red Velvet bandmate Seulgi also released an original soundtrack for the TV drama series Uncontrollably Fond in July 2016. She and her bandmate Irene became a fixed panelist on the KBS show Trick & True in October 2016. Wendy appeared on two other singles for the SM Station project "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," starring pianist Moon Jung-jae and violinist Nile Lee, as well as "Sound of Your Heart," a collaboration with several SM Entertainment artists in December 2016. She was featured in the English version of Latin pop star Ricky Martin's single "Vente Pa' Ca" in the same month.

In January 2017, Wendy Seulgi released "I Can Only See You" for the OST of the KBS2 TV series Hwarang. She sang "My Time" in Korean in February, part of Disney Channel's Elena of Avalor's official soundtrack and appeared in the company's official soundtrack. She became the host of K-Rush, a KBS World show. As part of the second season of the SM Station project, she and Shinhwa, Seulgi, released a remake of the 2001 song "Doll") by Shinhwa's Shin Hye-sung and Lee Ji-hoon. Its music video was a compilation of a video from the band's live appearance at the SMTOWN LIVE TOUR V in JAPAN, which was released on the same day. On December 2, she and Baek Ayeon performed "The Little Match Girl" in a duet. Wendy was selected in February 2018 as the interactive holographic avatar of SK Telecom's latest AI voice assistant speaker 'Holobox'.

Wendy Seulgi of Austria was filmed in Austria in June 2018 for Battle Trip's special episode titled 'The Country I Want to Live in'. Wendy performed on "One Summer" in July 2018 and was released on July 2 by Yang Da-il. As part of Wendy's sixth time to participate in the project, it was revealed in October that she would release "Written in the Stars" an English duet with American singer John Legend. On October 19, 2018, a YouTube video for the duet was released. Wendy performed "Goodbye" on the soundtrack of JTBC's drama "The Beauty Inside" in November 2018.

Wendy published "What If Love" for tvN's drama Touch Your Heart on February 22, 2019. Wendy performed in King of Mask Singer under the alias 'Green Witch' in October.

Wendy had her first public schedule since being injured in December 2019, with a live appearance on MBC Standard FM's Listen To Books. Wendy was confirmed to appear as the lead voice actor for DreamWorks' animated film Trolls: World Tour, the Korean release of DreamWorks' Trolls: World Tour. It was announced in April. Wendy worked with Zico for the OST of The King: "My Day Is Full Of You" during May 2020. Wendy also had a solo OST named "Two Words" in November 2020, in addition to Red Velvet's "Future" for the drama Start-Up. Wendy appeared in "Be Your Enemy," a brand new product on his album Never Gonna Dance Again, in the same month.

Wendy made her official return to television in January 2021 as a co-host of Mysterious Record Shop. Wendy will make her debut as a solo artist in March 2021, with an album debuting in April. This was later revealed to be her first EP Like Water, which features a total of five songs, was announced on April 5.

Wendy was announced as a member of Got the Beat in 2021 by Seulgi, a Red Velvet groupmate. On January 3, 2022, the company debuted on January 3, 2022.
