Wendy Richard Life

Wendy Richard, (born Wendy Emerton, 20 July 1943 – 29 February 2009), an English actress best known for her appearances on Miss Shirley Brahms' When You Being Served? Pauline Fowler on EastEnders, the former for nearly 22 years.

She was one of the first two original cast members of the program until she died on-screen from her on-screen cousin Ian Beale's appearance in December 2006.

She died on February 26, 2009, at the Harley Street clinic, where she was being treated for breast cancer.

Early life

Wendy Emerton, a single child, was born in Middlesbrough on July 20, 1943. Henry and Beatrice Reay (née Cutter) Emerton, her parents, were publicans and ran the Corporation Hotel in the town. In 1939, Emerton and Cutter married in Paddington. When Wendy was a baby, her family and her family migrated to Bournemouth. Wendy and her companion became trapped while climbing the cliffs and had to be rescued by the fire brigade while living in Bournemouth. The family then migrated to the Isle of Wight and then to London, where Elizabeth Taylor and Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, are reported to have been clients. Richard spent many family holidays in Jersey and Blackpool before going to St George's local primary school, but her education was interrupted when her family relocated to the Valentine Hotel in Gants Hill, Essex, this time to the Valentine Hotel in Gants Hill, Essex. The Streatham Park Hotel in south London underwent a new transformation just months later. Richard's father died in December 1954 when he was there. Richard, who was 11 years old at the time, discovered his body. Beatrice's mother was never married and died of liver cancer in May 1972.

After her father's death, she was enrolled in the Royal Masonic School for Girls at Rickmansworth, as Henry had been a Freemason, and the company was able to assist with fees. Her art teacher found the school excessively rigid, and her art mistress called her paintings and drawings "affected, perhaps like herself." Richard aspired to be a television continuity girl or film actress from a young age, and after leaving school at 15, she helped pay her way into the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London by working in the fashion department at the Fortnum and Mason department store. She worked at Fenwick briefly but was dismissed after two days for reminding a customer that a coat did not suit her after the customer begged for her opinion. "It was short and neat" at the time when she decided to change her surname to Richard. Richard became a model and began working for magazines like Woman's Own while at Italia Conti. When heading the road outside of Italia Conti's drama school, she was almost killed by a car. Richard's mother feared she was dead, but she had to have thirty-three stitches in her head, and her friend called her. In the ATV variety show Saturday Spectacular, she made her television debut in November 1961 when she appeared alongside Mandy Rice-Davies with Sammy Davis, Jr.

Personal life

Richard was married four times. Len Blach, a music publisher, was her first marriage, which lasted just five months. Will Thorpe, an advertising manager, was with her for six years; she married Thorpe in 1980, leaving him after 18 months of marriage. In 1990, she married Paul Glorney, a carpet fitter, in Westminster, London. It was divorced four years later. Richard spent 20 years as a painter and decorator in London's Marylebone neighborhood. They lived at a Mayfair hotel from 1996 to 2008. They stayed together until her death four months later. She had no children.

Richard was a Conservative Party backer. Margaret Thatcher and her policies were especially supportive of her. Scriptwriters gave Richard a script in which Pauline Fowler launched a tirade against Thatcher, but Richard refused to do it during his early years on EastEnders.

Richard was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996. She had surgery and was given the all-clear, but she had a recurrence of the disease in 2002. After years of medication, her cancer came back to a halt, and she was given a clean bill of health in 2005. According to Richard's dissatisfaction, articles about her expulsion from EastEnders suggested that her health issues did not influence her decision, but that her role in the soap remarried, to her displeasure. Richard later claimed she left due to anxiety and that she had been anxiety-free since leaving the show. She stayed in touch with co-stars Bill Treacher, Natalie Cassidy, Todd Carty, and James Alexandrou after being in touch with co-stars Bill Treacher, Natalie Cassidy, Todd Carty, and James Alexandrou.

Cancer cells were discovered in her left armpit in January 2008, and it was revealed in the Sunday Express on October 5th that she had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. It had metastasized to her left kidney and bones, including her spine and left ribs, according to a new investigation. Wendy Richard, To Tell You the Truth, a half-hour documentary narrating the last three months of her life, which was broadcast on BBC1 on March 19, 2009.

Kevin Francis, Richard's agent, died of breast cancer at a Harley Street clinic in London on February 26, 2009. John Burns, her husband's husband, was at her bedside. "She was incredibly brave and held her sense of humor right to the end," Francis said. On the day of her death, BBC One's episode of EastEnders and a memorial program were shown on the evening. Bill Treacher, Richard Fewler's on-screen husband, said the actress was a "true professional."

Many in the media industry and many followers attended Richard's funeral on March 9, 2009 at St Marylebone Parish Church. Her body was later cremated at a private service at Golders Green Crematorium. According to reports, the actress had already planned her funeral and written her will. David Croft, the maker of Are You Being Served?, unveiled a Heritage Foundation commemorative plaque at The Shepherds Tavern in London's West End, which Richard's parents had owned in July 2009.
