Vitaly Venediktovich Scherbo (or Shcherbo) (born in Minsk, Byelorussian SSR, 1972) is a Belarusian former artistic gymnast.
He is the first male gymnast to win a world championship in all eight sports (Individual All-Around 1992, 1994, and 1994, Rings in 1992, 1993, and 1994).
He was the most popular figure at the 1992 Summer Olympics, winning 6 of 8 games, including the team, all-around, and 4 of 6 event finals.
Career
His first international appearances came in 1990–1991, when he competed for the USSR team at the World Championship and the World Cup. He was the 1991 World All-Around silver medalist alongside teammate Grigori Misutin and scored a stunning 10.0 on the vault at the European Championships in 1990; and starred at the Goodwill Games in Seattle. He had occasional bouts of inconsistency, and Unified Team coaches regarded him as less of a medal candidate than his more experienced and reliable teammates as the 1992 Barcelona Olympics approached. Scherbo won six out of a total eight medals at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, one of the most popular performances in history. His gold medals were earned in the team competition, as the all around, pommel horse (tie), rings, vault, and parallel bars.
Scherbo married Irina soon after the 1992 Olympics. However, life in Scherbo's native Belarus became more turbulent, and his family was often chastised. They were burglarized, stolen money, valuables, and Olympic memorabilia were loolished. No one was home at the time, and his six gold medals from Barcelona were safely at his mother's house.
The family migrated to the United States shortly after settling in State College, Pennsylvania. They were able to profit from Scherbo's Olympic triumph through their move. He grew up on his Olympic triumph by winning the 1993 World All-Around title and the 1993 and 1994 American Cup.
Irina's wife was involved in a single car accident on December 13, 1995, in which she skidded off a road and slammed into a tree. Multiple fractures to her ribs and pelvis deteriorated her, and her internal injuries were so bad that doctors told her husband she had no chance of surviving. Scherbo stopped doing anything but work. He gained 15 pounds and started drinking alcohol. Irina recovered from her coma after a month and insisted that her husband resume his Olympic preparations. Scherbo began to recover physical strength after his wife's miraculous recovery, winning yet another World title in 1996. His appearances at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta highlighted his lack of preparation time, both due to his wife's death and a new shoulder surgery. He was marred by uncharacteristic behaviours, and the gold medals that had made him so popular were not forthcoming. Despite being clearly dissatisfied and dissatisfied with his inability to win gold, he was nevertheless a popular vote, and his four bronze medals were a triumph after a tumultuous year.
Scherbo had intended to compete in the 1997 World Championships but he lost his hand in a motorcycle accident before then and was forced to return shortly after.
