Vincent Gardenia (born Vincenzo Gardenia Scognamiglio; January 7, 1920 – December 9, 1992) was an Italian-American stage, film, and television actor.

He was nominated twice for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, first for Bang the Drum Slowly (1973), and then for Moonstruck (1987).

He also played Det.

Frank Ochoa (1974) and its 1982 sequel, as well as Mr. Mushnik in the musical film adaptation of Little Shop of Horrors (1986). Murder Inc. is one of Gardenia's other important feature films.

Early life

Vincenzo Scognamiglio was born in Ercolano, Città Metropolitana di Napoli, Campania, Italy, the elder son of Elisa (née Ausiello) and Gennaro Cardenia (or Cardenia Gennaro) Scognamiglio. The family immigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn, New York, when he was two years old.

His father founded an acting troupe that performed melodramas in Italian-languages. "The names changed, but they were normally about a son or daughter who is in danger, runs away, then begs forgiveness." He debuted in the company at age five, portraying a shoeshine boy. While still a youth, he transitioned to roleplays. He stayed a member of the company until 1960, five years after his first English-speaking role on Broadway.

Gardenia served in the United States Army during World War II.

Career

Gardenia appeared in The House on 92nd Street and bit parts in other films, including Cop Hater and A View From the Bridge. In 1955, he appeared in the Broadway play In April Once as a pirate for the first time. He appeared as Piggy in his Off-Broadway debut in The Man with the Golden Arms the following year, at the age 36. He referred to his appearance in the film Little Murders as a "turning point." In 1960 and 1969, he received Obie Awards.

In a 1972 play at The Prisoner of Second Avenue, opposite Peter Falk, a life member of The Actors Studio, Gardenia received a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. In 1979, he was selected for Best Actor in a Musical for his role in Ballroom.

He has been nominated twice for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his roles in Bang the Drum Slowly and Moonstruck.

Gardenia received the 1990 Emmy Award for her role in Age-Old Friends, with Hume Cronyn. Frank Lorenzo of Archie Bunker (1973–74) (and as a member of a swinger couple in a previous episode) and J. Edgar Hoover in the miniseries Kennedy (1983) are two of his best known television roles. He appeared in "Escape From Venice," an episode of Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.
