Victor Vasarely Life

Victor Vasarely (2006-04-09)9 April 1906 (97-03-15)15 March 1997), a Hungarian-French artist who is widely regarded as a "grandfather" and a founder of the op art movement. Some artists regard Zebra, his 1930s masterpiece, to be one of the first examples of op art.

Life and work

Vasarely was born in Pécs and grew up in Pöstény and Budapest, where he studied at Eötvös Loránd University in 1925. In 1927, he left medicine to study classical academic painting at the private Podolini-Volkmann Academy. He enrolled in 1928/1929 at Sándor Bortnyik's private art academy, Mhely (lit. "Workshop," which existed before 1938, but was later identified as Budapest's main Bauhaus research center. The mobsthely could not afford all of the Bauhaus's offerings because he was cash strapped. Rather, the group concentrated on applied graphic art and typographical layout.

He painted his Blue Study and Green Study in 1929. Claire Spinner (1908–1990), his fellow student, was married in 1930. Andre and Jean-Pierre were married together, and they had two sons, Andre and Jean-Pierre. Jean-Pierre was also an artist, and he used the term 'Yvaral' to describe him. He worked in Budapest for a ball-bearings company in accounting and designing advertising posters. Vasarely became a graphic designer and a poster artist in the 1930s, combining patterns and organic images with each other.

In 1930, Vasarely left Hungary and settled in Paris. He worked as a graphic designer and as a creative consultant at Havas, Draeger, and Devambez (1930–1935). During this period, his contacts with other artists were limited. After Sándor Bortnyik's death and produced some teaching material for it, he considered starting an institution modelled. He spent his time in cheap hotels in Saint-Céré, France, in the Lot département. He opened an atelier in Arcueil, a suburb about ten kilometres from Paris's center (in the Île-de-France's Val-de-Marne département). He finally settled in Annet-sur-Marne (in the Seine-et-Marne département) in 1961.

Vasarely eventually moved on to create art and sculpture using optical illusions. Vasarely's geometric abstract art developed over the past three decades, working in various media but with a limited number of forms and colors:

In October 1967, designer Will Burtin invited Vasarely to address Burtin's Vision '67 conference, which was held at New York University. Vasarely opened his first dedicated museum in Gordes on Friday, with over 500 works in a renaissance palace (closed in 1996). The Foundation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence, a museum housed in a distinct building specially built by Vasarely, was a second major undertaking. It was unveiled by French President Georges Pompidou in 1976, two years after his demise. The museum is now in a state of disrepair, and several of the works on display have been affected by water leaks from the ceiling. In addition, Georges Pompidou's large kinematic sculpture, which was on display in the Centre Pompidou in Paris, was installed in 1976, and the Vasarely Museum in Pécs, Hungary, was installed with a significant gift of Vasarely works. He took a shot at industrial design in the same decade as he produced a 500-piece run of Timo Sarpaneva's luxurious Suomi tableware that Vasarely decorated for the German Rosenthal porcelain manufacturer's Studio Linie. The cosmonaut Jean-Loup Chrétien's on board the French-Soviet spacecraft Salyut 7 in 1982, sent 154 specially produced serigraphs into space, later selling them for the benefit of UNESCO. The second Hungarian Vasarely museum, which opened in Budapest in 1987, at Zichy Palace, with more than 400 workers.

He died in Paris on March 15, 1997 at the age of 90.
