Vicky Kaushal Life

Vicky Kaushal (born 16 May 1988) is an Indian actor who appears in Hindi films.

He is the recipient of a National Film Award and a Filmfare Award. Kaushal, the action director, obtained an engineering degree from the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology.

He worked with Anurag Kashyap in the 2012 crime drama Gangs of Wasseypur and went on to play minor roles in two of Kashyap's films, aspiring to work in film.

His first leading role was in Masaan, which earned him the IIFA and Screen Awards for Best Male Debut, which followed his role as an unhinged cop in Kashyap's psychological thriller Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016). Kaushal rose to prominence in 2018 with supporting roles in Raazi and Sanju, two of the year's highest-grossing Hindi films.

He received the Best Supporting Actor award at Filmfare for the second time.

He also appeared in the Netflix films Love per Square Foot and Lust Stories in 2018.

In the commercially lucrative action film Uri: The Surgical Strike, winning the National Film Award for Best Actor this year, he appeared in the lead role of a military officer.

Early life and background

Kaushal was born in Mumbai on May 16, 1988, to Sham Kaushal, an action filmmaker in Indian films, and Veena Kaushal, a homemaker. Sunny, his younger brother, is also an actor. His family is a Punjabi Hindu who hails from Hoshiarpur. Kaushal has referred to himself as a "regular kid" who was keen on learning, playing cricket, and watching movies. His father was keen on his son's career away from show-business, and, as a result, he graduated with an engineering degree in Electronics and Telecommunications from Mumbai's Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology in 2009.

During an industry visit to an IT company in his graduation year, he discovered that he had no real interest in a career as a filmmaker and began aspiring to pursue a career in film. He spent time at Kishore Namit Kapoor's academy as well as being active in theatre with Manav Kaul's Aranya company and Naseeruddin Shah's Motley Productions, doing everything from backstage and announcements to stand-ins. Kaushal will perform for various auditions over the next two years, but did not have any good opportunities. In 2011, Laal Pencil, his first attempt at acting, was in a dramatic performance.

Kaushal began his career in film by serving as an assistant director to Anurag Kashyap in the two-part crime drama Gangs of Wasseypur (2012). Kaushal has fond memories of working with Kashyap, whom he regards as his mentor. He appeared in Kashyap's Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana (2012), Bombay Velvet (2015), and the short film Geek Out (2013).

Personal life and off-screen work

Kaushal's personal life has been chronicled in newspaper reports. Despite being well-known for his media-friendly demeanor, he has been suspicious of discussing his personal relationships. In 2018, Harleen Sethi was first linked to him. By the media in early 2019, they had announced their split. In a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony at Six Senses Resort in Fort Barwara, Rajasthan, Kaushal married actress Katrina Kaif on December 9, 2021. The wedding attracted considerable media coverage in India.

Kaushal has hosted and appeared at numerous television awards shows, including the Filmfare, Zee Cine, and Screen Awards, in addition to his acting career. He appeared at Femina Miss India's grand finale in 2019. He is a celebrity spokesperson for a number of companies and products, including Havells, Reliance Trends, and Oppo, who charge 30 million (US$380,000) per brand. Kaushal is also India's brand ambassador for Pearson.

Vicky Kaushal Career

Career

Kaushal's first leading role was in the independent drama Masaan (2015), directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. Both Kaushal and Ghaywan were assistants on Gangs of Wasseypur, and he was seated in an audition after Rajkummar Rao backed out. Kaushal spent time in Benaras, where the film is shot, to see local males' demeanors. The film was shown in the Uncertain Regard segment of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where it received two awards, including the FIPRESCI Prize. Masaan received critical acclaim, and the New York Times regarded it as a leading example of increased realism in Indian cinema. Kaushal's appearance was described by Nikhil Taneja of HuffPost as "poignant and memorable," and Anuj Kumar of The Hindu said, "he seamlessly conveys both the indignation complex and the attitude of breaking through the caste cauldron." Among other accolades, his appearances included nominations for Best Male Debut and the Asian Film Award for Best Newcomer.

At the 2015 Busan International Film Festival, Zubaan, which Kaushal had shot before Masaan, was shown. His role was that of a grieving man who starts stammering after his father's suicide. He worked with a speech therapist to develop stammering habits and spent time with some of the doctor's patients. Kaushal found it difficult to separate from the character and stammer in real life after finishing work on the film. His success prompted Variety's Justin Chang to call him a "charismatic, naturally engaging talent." Kaushal played a chain-smoking, heroin-addicted police officer in Kashyap's psychological thriller Raman Raghav 2.0 (2016), a serial killer played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The troubled and unbalanced character had little in common with Kaushal's own, and to convince Kashyap to cast him, he lived in silence for five days and kept repeating lines from the script. He also dehydrated himself and smoked heavily, affecting his health. Kaushal picked the role because he was keen to avoid typecasting from his first two films. In the Directors' Fortnight Section of the filmmakers' Fortnight Section, the film premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, receiving a positive response. Kaushal's "brave" and "surprising" performance, according to Aseem Chhabra of Rediff.com.

Kaushal made his mark in 2018 when he was on the red carpet of an Indian festival. Love per Square Foot, India's first original film from Netflix, he was the male lead of the romantic comedy Love per Square Foot. Shweta Ramakrishnan of Firstpost considered Kaushal's chemistry with co-star Angira Dhar to be the film's highlight. Later this year, it was shown at the Beijing International Film Festival. Kaushal will be seen in Meghna Gulzar's spy drama Raazi (2018), which is based on Harinder Sikka's book Calling Sehmat. The film, set during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani war, tells the true story of a young Indian spy (played by Alia Bhatt) who marries a Pakistani army officer (Kaushal). He was drawn to the humanity in the tale and went on to show both vulnerability and authority in his character. Kaushal's character was praised by Meena Iyer of Daily News and Analysis for being "the right foil" to Bhatt's "player."

Kaushal's biggest commercial success of the year 2018 came with Rajkumar Hirani's Sanju, a biopic of the troubled actor Sanjay Dutt, who was played by Ranbir Kapoor in the film. Kaushal portrayed his best friend, Kamli, a fictional amalgamation of several real-life friends of Dutt. He spent time with Paresh Ghelani, the primary source for the role in preparation. Samrudhi Ghosh of India Today wrote that he "has his own against Ranbir's incredible debut," and he performs well in both comedy and emotional scenes. Both Raazi and Sanju were among the top-grossing Hindi films of 2018, with earnings exceeding 5.79 billion (US$73 million) in India's highest grossers. Kaushal received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Sanju (tied with Gajraj Rao for Badhaai Ho).

Lust Stories, Kaushal's second Netflix film of the year, was the anthology film. It consists of four short films focusing on female sexuality; Kaushal appeared in Karan Johar's segment as a newly married man who struggles to recognize his wife's (played by Kiara Advani) sexual indignation. Kaushal reunited with Kashyaan in his final release of the year, a love triangle set in Punjab costarring Taapsee Pannu and Abhishek Bachchan. Kaushal performed Vicky Sandhu, a local DJ whose commitment problems led to conflict in his intimate relationship with Pannu's character. The film premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, receiving a warm critical reception. Anupama Chopra noted how well he used silence to convey his character's agony and apprehension. Shilpa Jamkhandikar of Reuters found him to be "at once petulant, childlike, and then beaming with a demeanor that keeps Vicky from being the villain of the story."

Kaushal starred as a military officer in Uri: The Surgical Strike, an action film based on the 2016 Uri assault directed by Aditya Dhar and shot in Serbia in 2019. He gained muscle mass, practiced a ketogenic diet, and attended five months of military training and mixed martial arts sessions to prepare. When filming an action sequence in it, he broke his arm. Kaushal was found to be a "fetching stoic lead," but the lack of depth in his character was disappointing. Rajeev Masand took note of the film's jingoism but opined that Kaushal "brings both the bulked-up physical appearance and the kind of steely determination that the role necessitates." Uri's income hit 2.4 billion (US$30 million) in India and over 3.5 billion (US$44 million) worldwide, making it the 10th highest-grossing Indian film domestically. Kaushal was given the National Film Award for Best Actor (shared with Ayushmann Khurrana for Andhadhun) and was nominated for the Best Actor award at the Filmfare Awards.

Kaushal appeared in Bhoot – Part One: The Haunted Ship (2020), as a bereaved shipping officer. During the filming of an action sequence, he suffered a fractured his cheekbone. In a film that he described as a "horrific misfire," Kaushal was discovered to be "earnest."

Shoojit Sircar's Sardar Udham premiered digitally on Amazon Prime Video in 2021, Kaushal's sole release in 2021, after repeated delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film is based on Udham Singh, a freedom fighter who assassinated Michael O'Dwyer as punishment for his involvement in the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Kaushal, who was 19 years old at the time of the shooting, lost over 15 kilograms in less than two months in order to portray a younger version of his character. The film received critical acclaim, particularly for Kaushal's appearance, with Chatterjee naming it his best performance to date. "Kaushal's Udham Singh is a performance laced with dignity, tinged with sadness, and defined by a dormant rage," Firstpost's Subhash K. Jha wrote. Kaushal received the IIFA Award for Best Actor and Best Actor for his work.

Kaushal has completed work on four new projects. In Shashank Khaitan's comedy film Govinda Naam Mera, he will star Kiara Advani and Bhumi Pednekar. Sara Ali Khan, who co-starred in Laxman Utekar's as-yet untitled next co-starring Sara Ali Khan, will appear in Laxman Utekar's as-yet untitled next co-starring Sara Ali Khan. He has also completed Anand Tiwari's as-yet untitled film co-starring Tripti Dimri and Vijay Krishna Acharya's family film The Great Indian Family opposite Manushi Chhillar. Kaushal will also appear in Rajkumar Hirani's immigration drama Dunki, co-starring Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu. Sam Bahadur, his second collaboration with Meghna Gulzar, will star in a biopic titled Sam Bahadur, about Field marshal Sam Manekshaw's life.
