Maria Venus Raj y Bayonito, also known as Venus Raj (born 7 July 1988; Doha, Qatar), is a Filipino actress, beauty queen, and television presenter. Raj was dethroned and later restored as Miss Universe Philippines 2010 due to her opposition to Filipino citizenship, which she defeated. Raj was named the fourth runner-up in the 59th Miss Universe pageant, where she popularized her fumbled answer "Major Major."
Early life and education
Maria Venus Raj was born in Doha, Qatar, to an Indian-American father and a Filipino mother, the youngest of five children. At the age of 21, Raj's family migrated in Bato, Camarines Sur in the Bicolandia.
Raj lived in a nipa hut made of wood, bamboo, and anahaw leaves, without electricity, in the middle of a sprawling rice field for the first two decades of her life. She reportedly used rice paddy dikes for her early training, where she later developed her distinctive walk.
Raj started out by competing in local beauty pageants, as well as oratorical competitions at San Vicente High School, where her English teacher served as her mentor. She then purchased property for her mother on an installment basis to ensure their family's happiness after they were rewarded in major tournaments.
Raj obtained her bachelor's degree in communications arts, majoring in journalism, from Bicol University in Legazpi City, with Latin honors (cum laude). She received a scholarship from the Francis Papica Foundation, which she earned. She began working as an Information Assistant for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Bicol Province. She started modeling as a part-time fashion model in both her native Bicol and Manila at the time.
Raj obtained her master's degree in community improvement from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 2017.
She graduated from the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics (OCCA), Oxford, England, in June 2021.
Television career
On various television shows as visitors, before and after Miss Universe. She eventually earned a spot on the morning show Umagang Kay Ganda, and even a stint on the morning show Umagang Kay Ganda. Raj signed an exclusive deal with ABS-CBN in 2011, coinciding with the network's acquisition of the Binibining Pilipinas pageant's airing rights for at least five years. Due to the show's reformat, she returned to hosting Umagang Kay Ganda in 2013. Raj completed her master's degree in Community Development at the University of the Philippines Diliman and lent a hand to the group titled "Care For Children" despite being less busy with entertainment commitments.
