Vanessa Joy Amorosi (born 8 August 1981) is an Australian singer-songwriter and recording artist.

Her album and single sales have hit more than two million worldwide.

She is best known for her vocal range and her ability to perform various genres of music, including pop, rock, blues, jazz, and gospel. Amorosi rose to fame in 1999 with the introduction of her debut single "Have a Look," which attained gold status in Australia.

She made international recognition with her debut studio album, The Power, the following year.

She appeared at both the 2000 Olympic Games opening ceremony and the Sydney closing ceremony.

Due to her spectacular live vocal range displayed, her appearance at "Heroes Live Forever" at the opening ceremony received international acclaim and adoration.

Early life

Amorosi was born in Melbourne, in a Roman Catholic family of Italian origins, and the niece of singers Frank and Joy Amorosi. When Amorosi was four, she and her younger siblings, Mellissa and Natasha, were planning tap, jazz, and classical ballet lessons, which were being run by her uncle. She attended Emerald Primary School and Emerald Secondary College. Amorosi began performing in shopping centers and local council concerts under her family's custody at the age of 12. She has also appeared on Young Talent Time. Amorosi was discovered performing at Matrioshka, a Carnegie Russian restaurant, by Jack Strom (After being referred to Leigh Hope) and signed a recording contract in 1997, Amorosi was discovered performing. She signed to MarJac Productions (co-owned by owners Mark Holden and Jack Strom) and recording a promo CD titled "Get Here" after being signed by Transistor Music Australia.

Amorosi's debut single "Have a Look" in 1999 became a Top 20 hit and went gold in Australia. She appeared at Carols in the Domain at the end of this year. "Take a Look" was followed by her second single "Absolutely Everybody," an anthemic dance track that debuted in the Top 10. It was awarded double platinum and became Australia's longest-charting single by an Australian female artist. It remained in the ARIA Top 50 Singles Chart for over six months after its introduction. "Absolutely Everybody" was released around the world and made it to the top ten in many European countries, including the United Kingdom and Germany, where it received a gold medal. On New Year's Eve at Darling Harbour, Amorosi attended numerous big activities, including the NRL Grand Final, the launch of the Motorcycle Grand Prix on Phillip Island, and the start of the new millennium.

Amorosi released two more singles in 2000 following the success of the first two singles. "Shine" and the double-sided single "The Power"/"Every Time I Close My Eyes" became big Australian hits. Both were awarded gold by the ARIA Australian music industry. The rights to produce a remixed version of "Shine" were purchased by airline Ansett Australia, who used this version for a commercial. Amorosi was one of many celebrities to make it big. "Every Time I Close My Eyes" was released in Europe as the fourth single from The Power and became her most popular song in Germany after "Absolutely Everybody."

On the Australian leg of their Affirmation World Tour, Amorosi supported Savage Garden from 29 April to May 25.

On the Australian album charts, her album The Power reached number one. In the ARIA Music Awards of 2001, Amorosi received six ARIA accolades, and The Power was nominated for "Best Female Artist" and "Best Pop Release." With appearances at the 2000 Sydney Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies as well as at the Paralympic Games, her largest audience appeared in September 2000. She performed the Olympic song "Heroes Live Forever" at the opening ceremony of the aforementioned Olympics. Amorosi released Turn to Me, a compilation album of new songs and tracks from The Power, which had not been released in Australia until October 2001. It also contains the theatrical version of the Olympic song "Heroes Live Forever," which is also included in the album. Turn to Me was only released in Australia and climbed to the top of the 30th century. On the ARIA singles chart, the album's single lead single reached number 80.

Amorosi travelled to Manchester in August 2002 to be one of the Commonwealth Games Hand-Over Ceremony's stars, performing her single "Shine" and a new song written specifically for the occasion, "I'll Always Be a Melbourne Girl."

Amorosi's second studio album Change was released on November 18, 2002. It was only in Germany that it was released, and it featured the previous released singles "One Thing Leads 2 Another," which debuted at No. 1 in Germany. 67 on the German Singles Chart and the Australian exclusive single-release "Spin (Everybody's Doin' It)," which has since become a top-50 hit on the ARIA Charts and reached 67. The album debuted at number 64 on the German Top 100.
