Personal life
Birsa was born in empeter pri Gorici, Slovenia's present day. Mateja, his long-time girlfriend, married him in 2012. Nolan is his son.
Club career
He was born in empeter pri Gorici, Slovenia, and spent his childhood in Nova Gorica, Slovenia. Birsa's career began at the age of five when he joined ND Bilje, the village club of Bilje near Nova Gorica. He was quickly moved from Primorje and then to Gorica at the age of 17.
In 2006, he signed for Sochaux, a French club in La Ligue de Football Professionnel. He won the 2007 Coupe de France while in Sochaux. As his team emerged victorious, his last game against Olympique de Marseille ended 2–2 and went to penalties, with Birsa scoring his penalty.
Auxerre signed him on a loan contract until Sochaux's June 2009. He scored his first Auxerre goal against Olympique Lyonnais. Auxerre had made the loan in effect permanent on May 29, 2009. Birsa scored his first UEFA Champions League goal against Ajax in the group stage during the 2010-11 season. Ajax would eventually win by 2–1.
Birsa signed a four-year deal with Genoa on February 2, 2011, amid widespread Premier League clubs such as Liverpool and Fulham's interest, the player. In his first season in Italy, he made just nine appearances.
On loan, he joined Torino on August 31. Birsa played 17 games in Torino, scoring two goals, but did not do enough to convince Torino to sign him on a long-term contract, so he returned to Genoa at the end of the season.
Birsa made the switch to AC Milan on August 31, 2013, which saw Luca Antonini move in the opposite direction. At Milan, he was given the number 14 shirt. On September 28, 2013, he scored his first goal for the Rossoneri against Sampdoria, giving the Rossoneri the win.
On July 9, 2014, he signed for Chievo on loan. Chievo signed Birsa outright in a three-year deal on July 2nd.
Birsa signed with Cagliari's Serie A side on January 9, 2019.
International career
Birsa served for Slovenia's national team from 2006 to 2018. In a World Cup qualifier against Poland that Slovenia defeated 3–0, he scored his first goal for the national team on September 9, 2009. Birsa fired a long-range curling shot in Slovenia's second group stage match against the United States at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Slovenia won the match 2–2.
