Tyler Shields Career

Life and career

Shields was born in Jacksonville, Florida.

Shields competed competitively as a vert inline skater. He appeared in the 1999 and 2000 X Games as well as toured with Tony Hawk in 2003.

Fraser Kee Scott of A Gallery is credited with discovering him, saying, "I have a lot of people that are Scientologists." says Shields, the gallery's founder, found me back in the MySpace days. He's a very smart guy and he has a keen eye for things. He was at my last gallery, and to my knowledge, he wasn't promoting Scientology to anyone because he was selling art."

In August 2009, Shields was involved in a photoshoot with The Vampire Diaries cast members Nina Dobrev, Candice Accola, Kayla Ewell, and Sara Canning at Rumble Road Bridge, Smarr, Georgia. Following public notices, the group was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

Shields has exhibited a number of photos. Vanity Fair in January 2016 included some of Shields' photographs of Colton Haynes and Emily Bett. A black man was hanging a KKK member in Shields' film "Historical Fiction" [2015]. The series chronicled events from James Dean's death, John F Kennedy, Dr Martin Luther King, and Marilyn Monroe; the first men to fly; and The Beatles' break-up. In his 2014 film Prosecu, an alligator biting a crocodile bag. As part of Sotheby's auction in London, "Three Witches" another photograph from this series, "Three Witches," was included. In the Phillips' London auction, his photograph "Bunny" was on display.

According to some commentators, including Henry Leutwyler, art critic Paddy Johnson, and writer/photographer Jamie Lee Curtis Taete, Tyler Shields takes other artists' ideas and passes them off as his own.

Tyler Shields has published two books on photography. In November 2013, Harper Collins' affiliate Dey Street Books published his first photography book, "The Dirty Side of Glamour." In January 2017, his second book, "Protestateur," was published.

Shields' artwork often includes depictions of violence and danger. He collected blood from 20 celebrities to create a work of art for his Life Is Not a Fairytale exhibit in Los Angeles, and also photographed Lindsay Lohan as a vampire for the show. Lohan was photographed in 2010 by Shields in studio portraits brandishing a pistol. Shields was chastised for a photo shoot with Heather Morris in Glee as a victim of female violence. His work has been chastised for imitating other photographers' work. Both Donald Trump Jr. and Chelsea Clinton condemned the activity in 2017. Sheelds' photograph of Kathy Griffin holding a "bloody head resembling" US President Donald Trump's face sparked outrage in 2017. Griffin chastised Shields for declining to grant her the photograph's copyright, as well as the relatively small amount of public skepticism directed toward Griffin, which Griffin attributed to sexism.

The Wild Ones, a series of the most well-known unproduced screenplays, was included in the Black List on December 15, 2014, an annual list of the most well-liked unproduced screenplays. The 2015 action thriller film Final Girl, which starred Abigail Breslin, was directed by Shields.
