Tyler Lepley (born March 24, 1987) is an American actor best known for his role as Benjamin "Benny" Young on the Tyler Perry produced The Have and the Have Nots, the first scripted television series to air on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

Early life and education

Lepley's mother and stepfather, who has been in his household since the age of 6, were born and raised in Philadelphia. Lepley is an Italian on his mother's side and Jamaican on his biological father's side. Lepley admitted that he was teased as a child because he was the only biracial boy in his class. He graduated from Central Bucks High School West in Doylestown. Lepley played in many sports, including track, football, basketball, karate, as a young child, and boxing, but as he aged, he concentrated more on football than ever before.

Lepley played football in high school under the name Tyler Dinnis. He sustained an accident in June 2003 that nearly ended his football career and then underwent surgery. Lepley had returned to action by the summer of 2004 and had been named MVP of Villanova University's sports camp. On a football scholarship, he attended Kutztown University. Lepley played football for the university until the fall of 2007. Lepley obtained a degree in criminal justice from Kutztown in 2010. Lepley accepted a friend's invitation to relocate to Los Angeles in 2011 and began as a personal trainer at Iron Fitness Gym in Santa Monica.

Career

Lepley was discovered by a producer at a boxing gym who had invited him to audition about three months after he had arrived in Los Angeles. From that meeting, he booked a lead role in the independent horror film Slumber Party Slaughter. Lepley, reluctantly took his agent's advice to get serious about acting and enrolled in acting classes, and he made his acting debut in an episode of The CW's 90210. After a lengthy casting process, Benny appeared on Tyler Perry's The Haves and the Have Nots in 2013. Lepley was quite surprised that Perry came to the audition dressed as his well-known Madea character because he was shooting a movie at the time. Lepley appeared in the 2013 comedy Baggage Claim starring Paula Patton.

Jaxon played the lead in the made-for-television film, directed by Russ Parr, in early 2016. The film premiered in September 2016, according to TV One. Everybody Hates Chris actor Tequan Richmond and R&B singer Sevyn Streeter were among his costars. Lepley was cast in the Starz drama P-Valley in 2019. He appeared in the Harlem Tracy Oliver Amazon comedy series in 2020.
