Professional wrestling career

Arneill attended Hart Wrestling School in Cambridge, Ontario, with Smith Hart, Ike Shaw, and Waldo Von Erich, as well as Eric Young at the WrestlePlex Academy, before receiving further instruction from Derek Wylde and Cody Deaner. Shawn Spears' debut in March 2002 as Shawn Spears, began wrestling for some of Ontario and the United States' most popular independent wrestling tournaments, including Border City Wrestling, World Xtreme Wrestling, and Blood Sweat and Ears. Arneill appeared on an episode of WWE Heat on February 27, 2005, but he was unsuccessfully collaborating with Mikael Yamaha to face The Hurricane and Rosey.

Arneill was called for a try-out in Buffalo, New York, after delivering a tape to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) officials. Following the tryout, he was signed to a developmental deal by WWE following the tryout on January 21, 2006. He made a cameo appearance on Sunday as an employee named "Stan," who is screamed by Shawn Michaels of D-Generation X because Michaels is told that he doesn't know the word "controversial" means.

Arneill was assigned to the company's overseas territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling, after signing his WWE deal. (OVW) Shawn Spears, the Canadian senator, made his OVW television debut on Saturday as "The Sensation" on Shawn Spears, defeating then-SmackDown! Simon Dean, the king of soccer. Dean became enraged after his victory over Spears until Al Snow, who fended off Dean with a chair, saved him. Spears made an impact in OVW shortly after making his debut with a short streak that was shattered by Aaron "The Idol" Stevens after Stevens stopped Stevens from submitting Spears. Spears formed a tag team with Cody Runnels and fought with the Southern Tag Team Championships right after this. Spears and Runnels took the title from The Throwbacks on December 15, 2006. Spears interfered and played a piledriver to Runnels, preventing him from winning the Heavyweight Championship and thus solidifying his heel turn. Spears then began feuding with Runnels and eventually lost the Television Championship to him on July 6, 2007 before winning it a week later. On September 19, he lost the title to the debuting Ted "Manbeast" McNailer. Spears regained the Television title after only losing it to Colt Cabana. Spears had re-signed with WWE, and he had been sent to WWE's developmental territory NXT under the ring name Tye Dillinger as a result. In a losing effort against Mojo Rawley, he made his televised NXT debut on his debut.
