In 1989-1990, he attended Lees_McRae College before it became a four-year college. Brown, a standout wide receiver, punt returner, and kickoff returner for Marshall University in 1991, a year in which Brown and quarterback Todd Donnan tied for a record by combining for a 99-yard pass play against Virginia Military Institute in college. Marshall won the inaugural national championship with Brown as the primary wide receiver and returner. Brown clinched the game by intercepting a Hail Mary Youngstown State pass in the final seconds of the game.

His career kickoff return average (29.69 yards per year) remains an NCAA record, as well as his four kickoff returns for touchdowns. For every eight times he touched the football, he scored one touchdown.

Brown's alma mater gave him a distindistintive alumni award in 2006.

Professional career

In the eighth round of the 1993 NFL Draft (198th overall), Brown was drafted by the Patriots out of Marshall. He was waived as a final cut in the 1994 pre-season by head coach Bill Parcells, but he was fired on October 19, 1994. He didn't start playing in a wide receiver until 1995, leading to 14 catches for 159 yards. He made 21 catches for 222 yards in 1996, when the New England Patriots first entered the Super Bowl. Despite being behind Terry Glenn and Shawn Jefferson on the depth chart at receiver and also competing with Ben Coates and Vincent Brisby for catches, he had 41 catches for 607 yards and 6 touchdowns in 1997. In 1998, he resumed his duties as a punt returner.

He started playing as a starter in 2000, with 83 attempts for 944 yards and 4 touchdowns. He and Tom Brady led the Patriots to their first Super Bowl title in 2001, throwing 101 passes for 1,199 yards and 5 touchdowns, setting the franchise record for receptions and winning his first and only trip to the Pro Bowl in 2001. He has also passed for 413 yards and 2 touchdowns, giving him a league-best 14.2 yards per return average. Brown made the winning margin by throwing a touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the AFC Championship Game at Heinz Field in the playoffs this season, adding to the two players who saw touchdowns during the regular season. He also scooped up a blocked field goal attempt in the game and gave a lateral pass to teammate Antwan Harris, who led to the team's second special teams touchdown. In 2002, he had 97 receptions for 890 yards and 3 touchdowns. He had 40 catches for 472 yards in 2003, leading his team back to Super Bowl XXVIII.

He had only 17 receptions in 2004, but he played a role on defense as a result of an emergency role, ranking second on the team in interceptions with three. Eugene Wilson was the only one to lead this class. Bill Belichick, the Patriots' head coach, joked that he lined Brown up "to create his legend," showing his versatility during the 2006 preseason; when asked why Brown had been there, he responded positively.

Brown was suspended by the Patriots on March 1, 2005 for salary cap reasons, but he signed a new one with them on May 23, 2005. Despite a better financial deal for the New Orleans Saints, he decided not to sign. He made 39 receptions for 466 yards in 2005.

Brown and the New England Patriots reached an understanding on a 15th season, making him the second longest-playing Patriot at the time, behind Steve Grogan; both have since been surpassed by Tom Brady. On July 28, he was placed on the physically fit to function (PUP) list, but he was activated on November 27.

Brown is the Patriots' all-time leading punt returner with 252 yards and 3 touchdowns, in addition to playing offense and defense with triumph. He is his third all-time in Patriots history (572), and his third all-time record in receiving yards (6,366). With eight years as the Super Bowl's most punt returns in a career, he holds the most punt returns in a career.

Brown is the only player in NFL history with at least 550 receptions, 250 punt returns, and an interceptor.

The Patriots defeated the favored San Diego Chargers in a memorable game for Brown in 2006 AFC Divisional Playoff season. The Patriots were down 21-13 and facing 4th and 5th in the game with 5 minutes remaining. Tom Brady threw his third interception of the game to Marlon McCree of the Chargers. Brown, who made what teammate Tedy Bruschi called a "quick mental switch" from offensive to defensive player, elicitively ripped the ball out of McConnell's grasp, and hurled the ball from his grasp. The Patriots Reche Caldwell recovered the fumble, giving them a fresh set of downs. With a touchdown and a two-point conversion, New England tied the score and then won the game on a 31-yard field goal. In the game, Brown also caught 5 passes for 39 yards.

Brown is a fan favorite of many Patriots fans due to his style of play and years of service to his team. His punt career in the 2001 AFC Championship, as well as several major plays throughout his Patriot career, culminated in his induction into the Patriots Hall of Fame at Patriots Place.

The Boston Globe announced on March 13, 2008, that the Patriots would not give Brown a contract for the 2008 season. During a press conference with Patriots owner Robert Kraft and head coach Bill Belichick on September 25, 2008, Brown officially retired from professional football. With 557, he ended his playing career as the New England Patriots' all-time leader in receptions.

Brown was elected to the Patriots Hall of Fame by fan vote on June 4, 2012, beating out former head coach Bill Parcells and safety Fred Marion.

Post-playing career

Brown has been a football analyst with NBC Sports Boston since 2008. Brown and his colleague Tom Brady appeared on the Family Guy's episode "Patriot Games." In the 2012 film The Three Stooges, he also appeared in a cameo.
