Harold Watson (born August 22, 1964) is an American television news presenter, former soldier, and former federal prosecutor who served as the U.S. Representative for South Carolina's 4th congressional district from 2011 to 2019.
His district included a large portion of South Carolina's Upstate area, including Greenville and Spartanburg.
Gowdy served as a federal prosecutor in South Carolina from 1994 to 2000, and then as the solicitor (district attorney) for the Seventh Judicial Circuit of South Carolina, which includes Spartanburg and Cherokee counties from 2000 to 2010.
Gowdy chaired the United States House Select Committee on Events Surrounding the 2012 Terrorist Attack in Benghazi, which was partially responsible for Hillary Clinton's personal email server's existence from 2014 to 2016.
His inquiry team spent over two and a half years and $7.8 million investigating the 2012 Benghazi attack, with no signs of specific wrongdoing by the then-Secretary of State Clinton.
During Hillary Clinton's 2016 re-election bid, Gowdy filed a lawsuit.
In addition, Gowdy correctly stated that classified emails existed, but the CIA did inform the panel on Saturday that it had reviewed 127 emails between Clinton and her close friend and outside consultant Sidney Blumenthal, which none of which was considered classified.
Following the evidence, it was determined that this was false.
He chaired the House Oversight Committee from 2017 to 2017. Gowdy revealed on January 31, 2018 that he did not run for re-election in 2018 and that instead of politics, he wanted to pursue a legal career rather than politics.
He has since joined law firm Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, as a reporter, and has also worked with Fox News as a reporter.
In October 2019, he revealed that he was joining President Donald Trump's legal team but that due to a conflict of interest, he would no longer serve as a reporter to Fox News.
However, Gowdy's plan to join the lawyers defending Trump was cancelled just a few days later due to fears that he would be violating anti-lobbying legislation.
