Early life
Trevor Noah was born in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa, on February 20th, 1984. Robert's father, who is of Swiss-German origins, and his mother, Patricia Nombuyiselo Noah, is Xhosa.
Noah's mother was black under apartheid law, and his father was designated as White. Noah himself was described as Coloured. Noah's parents' interracial union was unlawful at the time of his birth, which Noah details in his autobiography. When the Immorality Act was amended in 1985, interracial sexual relations and marriages were not criminalized until a year after his birth. Trevor was raised in Soweto's black township by Patricia and her mother, Nomalizo Frances Noah. Noah attended Maryvale College, a private Roman Catholic primary and high school in Maryvale, Gauteng, a suburb of Johannesburg.
Personal life
Noah is a historian who speaks English, Afrikaans, Southern Sotho, Zulu, Xhosa, Tswana, Tsonga, and some German.
Patricia Nombuyiselo, Noah's mother, married Ngisaveni Abel Shingange in 1992; they had two sons together, Andrew and Isaac. Trevor and his mother were physically assaulted by the Shingange, and the couple were legally divorced in 1996. Shingange shot her in the leg and the back of her head in 2009, then fled with minimal injury to her nostrils after Patricia married Sfiso Khoza. Shingange assaulted Noah over the phone about the shooting, causing Noah to leave Johannesburg for Los Angeles.
Shingange was found guilty of attempted murder in 2011 and sentenced to three years of probation the following year. Noah expressed hope that the surrounding events would raise concerns of domestic violence in South Africa: "My mother reached out to police for assistance with domestic violence for years, but nothing was ever done." In South Africa, this is the norm. Dockets were missing, and litigation never went to court."
Noah has described himself as progressive and having a global view. However, he has stated that he considers himself a "protester" but not a "political liberal" and that he does not want to be characterized as either right or left in the context of US partisanship.
Noah founded The Trevor Noah Foundation, a youth development initiative that aids youth in a better life by providing them with the opportunity for a happier life: access to high-quality education. Noah's dream is a world where education helps youth to dream, see, and build the impossible.
Noah was selected as the Class Day speaker for Princeton University's Class of 2021. He delivered his address practically on May 2021 and was inducted as an honorary member of the Class of 2021.
Noah has ADHD. He lives in New York City.
Career
Noah appeared in a small part of an episode of the South African soap opera Isidingo in 2002. Noah's Ark, his own radio show on Gauteng's top youth radio station, YFM, later appeared on his own radio show Noah's Ark. He shifted his radio show and acting to comedy, including David Kau, Kagiso Lediga, Riaad Moosa, Marc Lottering, Barry Simpson, Nik Rabinowitz, and Nik Rabinowitz, international comedians such as Paul Rodriguez, Carl Barron, Dan Ilic, and Paul Zerdin, as the opening act for American comedian Russell Peters' South African tour in November 2007.
On SABC 2, Noah hosted Run the Adventure (2004–2006), an educational television show. He hosted The Real Goboza, a gossip-themed show on SABC 1, and Siyadlala, a sports show on the SABC, in 2007. Noah cohosted The Amazing Date (a dating gameshow) in 2008 and was a Strictly Come Dancing contestant in the fourth series. He hosted the 3rd Annual South Africa Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) in 2009 and co-hosted with Eugene Khoza on The Axe Sweet Life, a reality competition series. Noah hosted the 16th annual South African Music Awards in 2010 and later appeared on Mnet's Tonight with Trevor Noah (for the second series, it was moved to the Mzansi Magic Channel). In 2010, Noah became a spokesperson and customer advocate for Cell C, South Africa's third-largest smartphone network provider.

The Daywalker (2009), Crazy Normal (2011), That's Racist (2012), and It's My Culture (2013) are among his stand-up comedy specials in South Africa.
He immigrated to the United States in 2011. Noah became the first South African stand-up comedian to appear on The Tonight Show in January 2012, and he was the first South African stand-up comedian to appear on the Late Show with David Letterman in May 2013. Noah was the focus of the 2012 documentary You Laugh At It's True. He appeared on Trevor Noah: The Racist, a one-man comedy film based on his similarly named South African special That's Racist. In November 2013, he was a panelist on Channel 4's 8 Out of ten Cats and spent time with Sean Lock's crew in 8 Out of ten Cats Does Countdown.
Noah became a regular contributor to The Daily Show in December 2014. Noah will replace Jon Stewart as the host of The Daily Show in March 2015, according to Comedy Central; his tenure began on September 28, 2015.
Following Stewart's replacement, he was drawn to humour on his Twitter account, some of which were mocked as offensive to women, and others as antisemitic or mocking the Holocaust. Noah replied by tweeting, "To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that did not land is not a true reflection of my character nor my evolution as a comedian." "Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is ingenious, and spares no one, including himself..." To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a natural comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central. The jokes, according to Mary Kluk, chairperson of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJ), were not signs of anti-Jewish mistrust or that they were part of Noah's style of comedy. After footage of him joking about Aboriginal women and the Marikana massacre in old standup routines resurfaced, Noah has been strongly chastised.
Following Noah's demise of Stewart, viewership dropped by 37%, and its Nielsen ratings fell below those of many other shows hosted by Daily Show alumni; however, according to Comedy Central's president, the Daily Show under Noah was the number one show for millennials. "Mr. Noah's debut was mainly due to the operating system, the show's script, and running under the surface," James Poniewozik of The New York Times praised him and the show's writers. Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times described him as "charming and composed"—almost entirely low-key compared to Stewart's habitually antic and astonished him. "Jon Stewart created a national treasure" was one of Salon's less favorable reviews. Noah has dulled its knife, stunted the parody, and allowed the brave to roam free." Comedy Central and Netflix have three stand-up specials as a result of Noah's presence on the show. By 2017, nightly viewership had decreased by less than half of what it had been at at the time of Stewart's tenure; television reception among millennials remained strong, though Comedy Central extended Noah's deal as host of The Daily Show until 2022. He will also produce and host annual end-of-year specials for Comedy Central.
In April 2017, Jordan Klepper's Opposition with Jordan Klepper, which premiered in September and ran for one season, was born. In addition to the contract, Noah will also be launching Day Zero Productions, an international production and distribution company.
After seven years as the show's host, Noah revealed on September 29th, 2022, he would leave The Daily Show at an undetermined future date. He's been longing to return to television shows, learning new languages, and "being somewhere, doing everything." Noah's last show would be on Thursday, December 8, 2022, according to the following month.

One of the best books of the year by The New York Times, Newsday, Esquire, NPR, and Booklist. Lupita Nyong'o would appear as his mother in a film adaptation based on the book, according to the company.
