Career
Miller began recording music in the 2000s under a number of aliases. The bulk of his early music is unlikely to be found on the internet today, but some of it has been re-released, such as on his Register compilation album. Vudmurk and Seidhr, the industrial and noise projects Across, Public Garden and Rats, and The Legacy, an underground hip hop group, during which time he rapped under the name Young Gus, were among his early work.
Miller's debut on Bandcamp and producing beats for himself and others under the name Shawn Kemp in 2010. His early work under the Lil Ugly Mane name drew on a number of underground Southern hip hop styles from the 1990s, including Memphis rap and chopped and screwed. His style was similar to that of the contemporaneous Raider Klan group, with whom he collaborated. Mista Thug Isolation, his debut album in 2012, received praise from Mishka, New York, among other things, as well as support from members of the famed hip hop group Odd Future. The album has since been praised by Pitchfork and The Needle Drop for their continued praise of the 2010 underground hip hop scene. The album was followed by a number of smaller releases, including the Uneven Compromise EP, which is ranked as one of the top ten greatest EPs of all time by user-generated music review website RateYourMusic, and the single "On Doing an Evil Deed Blues," in which he detailed his frustrations with the music industry and his decision to abandon the Lil Ugly Mane project.
Miller revealed one last album under the Lil Ugly Mane brand, and began releasing compilations of beats and older material on Bandcamp, including the Three Sided Tape's final installment, which received praise from Anthony Fantano of The Needle Drop among others. Miller released what was supposed to be the final Lil Ugly Mane album, Oblivion Access and the final Shawn Kemp project – Trick Dice, a project with rapper Nickelus F. Oblivion Access, saw Lil Ugly Mane taking a more experimental approach, based on his earlier '90s Southern rap influences.
Miller confirmed that he would continue rapping under the name Bedwetter and unveiled his debut project, titled Volume 1: Flick Your Tongue Against Your Teeth and Describe the Present. Oblivion Access's more reflective and experimental style continued throughout the album. Miller began rapping under the Lil Ugly Mane name again as part of the group Secret Circle with Antwon and Wiki around the same time, but not quite as often as Antwon and Wiki. The group disbanded and scrapped their debut album due to a personal tragedy after releasing a few singles. Miller began working with GothBoiClique's remaining members, but the company soon went on hiatus, with only small collections of older stuff being released sporadically.
Miller began releasing new music under the Lil Ugly Mane name in 2021. He released the single "Headboard," "Porcelain Slightly" and then his third major release under the Lil Ugly Mane name – Volcanic Bird Enemy and Voiced Concern, which were both covered positively by Sputnik Music and Stereogum. Miller also began a new black metal demo under the Vudmurk name around the same time.
