Traianos Dellas Career

Club career

Dellas played football in 1993 and 1995 at Aris, where he helped the club of Thessaloniki qualify for the 1994–95 UEFA Cup. He competed with Fanis Katergiannakis, with whom they won Euro 2004 with Greece in Portugal.

Dellas was loaned to Panserraikos for two seasons, where he appeared on a regular basis in the summer of 1994.

Dellas returned to Aris before joining Sheffield United in England. Sheffield United fans will recall a 1999 match against Tranmere Rovers. Dellas came on as a replacement and scored twice as they defeated 3–2, putting United 2–0 down. In a home game against Portsmouth, he had another goal with "the Blades" a spectacular 30-yard shot, which was also a late winner.

In 1999, Dellas returned to Greece to perform with Athens in accordance with Vasilis Dimitriadis' recommendation. He won the Greek Cup in 2000, alongside Demis Nikolaidis and Vasilios Tsiartas. Dellas had a solid presence for two years in the team, but the intense competition surrounding central defenders and his lack of speed led to the expulsion of Makis Psomiadis and coach Fernando Santos in 2001, considering the sheer number of center backs on the roster.

Dellas left AEK after being fired from the Italian team, Perugia. Dellas was suspended from Perugia's first team due to a rift over his employment, and he did not make a single appearance in the last six months of the season, total, only eight matches.

Since leaving the club, Dellas caught the attention of Serie A club Roma, and he joined the team on a free transfer in 2002. Dellas' results were impressive, with Fabio Capello's transfer to Juventus establishing himself as a starter. During Roma's miserable 2004–05 season, he had the honor of being one of three players alongside Francesco Totti and Vincenzo Montella who were not booed by the fans during training and games. Dellas became a free agent after struggling to renew his player deal with the club. Due to back and hernia injuries, he would eventually miss nearly 8 months of football, and, consequently, hope from Europe's top clubs has failed to materialize.

Dellas decided to return to AEK in 2005, where his former colleague and good friend Demis Nikolaidis was president. He renewed his employment in June 2007 for a second two years as Team Captain, and was also a member of the French Armed Forces. Dellas appeared on televisions alongside rivals, Pantelis Kafes, and Sokratis Papastathopoulos. AEK came close to winning the league, but the opportunity was lost due to the "Valner affair" and the championship went to Olympiacos. After struggling to reach an agreement on a new deal, Dellas and AEK decided to end his employment by mutual consent on July 23, 2008.

On July 24, 2008, Anorthosis Famagusta, a Cypriot football team, agreed to a two-year contract. When he was at AEK, Panathinaikos, and Inter Milan of José Mourinho, Dellas aided the team in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League in 2008–09, in the same group with his rival club.

Dellas signed with AEK Athens again on June 5, 2010, this time for one year, with the possibility of ending his career with the team he supports. Nikos Liberopoulos has been back to the club, and the team and Dellas formed their leading pair together. Dellas scored his first goal in the Greek championship against AEL on December 12, 2010 after two years' absence. He scored in the semi-finals of the cup against PAOK on March 16, 2011, sending AEK to the final of the tournament. Dellas won his second Cup on April 30, 2011 with AEK's second cup. When Dellas announced his retirement from professional football on May 26, 2012, he was playing at AEK for one more season.

International career

Dellas made his first appearance for Greece in April 2001, defeating Croatia 2–2 for the first time. Dellas had a spectacular tournament at Euro 2004, partnering with his old colleague Michalis Kapsis at AEK, in the middle of what became an almost impenetrable Greek defense, which culminated in him being selected into the tournament's all-star squad. He scored the only silver goal ever against the Czech Republic in the last minute of extra time against Greece, allowing Greece to advance to the final. This was his only goal for the Greek team. In honor of his participation in the tournament, Greece's coach, 'the Colossus of Rhodes,' he was dubbed "the Colossus of Rhodes," and the moniker is now widely used in the press.

Dellas continued to be the center of the Greek defense after Euro 2004, but they missed almost eight months in 2005 due to injury. His absence was seen as a significant factor in Greece's unsuccessful 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. Dellas also aided Greece in qualifying for Euro 2008, but he didn't return to the group stage without a single point and having only scored one goal. He was also part of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign but was not called up after the win over Israel on April 1. He was not included in the provisional squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Managerial career

Dellas was named as the head coach of Athens' Ewald Lienenen on April 4, 2013, replacing Ewald Lienenen, while Akis Zikos was appointed assistant manager. Dellas remained at the club's wheel in Greece's third division, rather than the second tier in order to clear the team's debts following AEK's relegation from the Super League. In 2015, he led the team back to the Super League. After a 4–0 loss to Olympiacos on October 20, Dellas resigned on October 20, 2015.

He signed a new Atromitos club contract on November 7, 2015, which was on November 7th. He signed a deal with Panetolikos on January 12, 2018. On April 19, 2019, he resigned. Panetolikos, the team's manager, confirmed his return to the club on November 10, 2020, in the hopes of avoiding relegation. His second season in the relegation play-offs came to an end on June 5th, 2021, after the club thanked him for avoiding relegation for the club, which was mainly due to an away goal in a (2–1) loss, and a late goal victory at home (1–0) in the second leg.
