Tracie Nicole Thoms (born August 19, 1975) is an American television, film, and stage actress and singer.

She is best known for her appearances in Rent, Cold Case, The Devil Wears Prada, Death Proof, and the short-lived Fox television series Wonderfalls.

Early life and education

Thoms was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, as the daughter of PBS and TV director Donald H. Thoms and his mother Mariana Davis. Austin is her younger brother. She began studying acting at the age of ten and later attended the Baltimore School of the Arts.

In 1997, she obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Howard University. She then attended Juilliard School's Drama Division, where she was also a member of Group 30 (1997-2001), which also included actors Lee Pace and Anthony Mackie.

Career

Thoms is best known for her role as Mahandra McGinty in the television series Wonderfalls. She appeared in the US version of the T.V. She also appeared as Sasha. As If, a series that was cancelled after three episodes, was canceled after three episodes. Kat Miller, a homicide detective, was recruited to the cast of CBS crime drama Cold Case in 2005. Thoms has also appeared on Law & Order and The Shield.

Thoms has appeared in numerous films, most notably in the film version of the Broadway musical Rent, in which she plays Joanne Jefferson, solicitor and lover of Maureen Johnson (Idina Menzel). She inherited the role from Fredi Walker, who appeared Joanne in the original Broadway production of Rent, but she was deemed too old to reprise the role at age 43. Thoms said she was a fan of the show prior to being cast as Joanne on Broadway.

She appeared in Porn'n Chicken, as well as the 2004 films Brother to Brother and The Warrior Class. Thoms appeared in the 2006 film version of The Devil Wears Prada as Lily. Thoms has finished filming on the City Lights Pictures film Descent alongside Rent co-star Wilson Jermaine and Rosario Dawson, and Jamie Coddington and Rosario Dawson, and they will film Jimmie with Vanessa Williams and Brian McKnight. She appeared in Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof alongside Zo Bell, Rosario Dawson, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Drowning Crow, Regina Taylor's debut, made her Broadway debut. She has appeared in several off-Broadway and regional productions, including Up Against the Wind (The Shakespeare Theater Workshop), The Oedipus Plays (The Shakespeare Theatre), A Raisin in the Sun (Baltimore CenterStage) and The Exonerated (The Women's Project). On July 18, 2008, she became the fourth cast of Rent, reprising Joanne's character until replacing Merle Dandridge. Rent: The last performance was turned into a DVD.

Joanne appeared in another production of Rent directed by Neil Patrick Harris from August 6 to 10, 2010.

Quentin Tarantino in Los Angeles, a recording of the show at Barre, a concert revue released by ROCKLA in the fall of 2010. Jenna Leigh Green, Autumn Reeser, Ty Taylor, and Audra Mae all appeared from August 12, 2010 to October 30, 2010. Thoms appeared on For The Record: John Hughes from November 2010 to January 2011, as well as Barrett Foa, Von Smith, and Ty Taylor. Thoms appeared in Annie's 2014 version, portraying Annie's "fake mother," a Lily St. Regis character from the original musical.
