Tosin Abasi Career

Life and career

Tosin Abasi was born in Washington, D.C., to Nigerian immigrant refugees in the United States. Abdul Abasi, his brother, served in the US military and is now a fashion designer.

Abasi is primarily a self-taught guitarist. He first picked up a guitar at his buddy's house, simply strumming it and making up basic licks on the spot. He was introduced to some music as a child by learning the clarinet in elementary school at this moment. He began renting hair metal guitarists' instructional video tapes from his local music store, saying that some "were videos you did not want to be watching" due to racy content in those tapes (e.g. Women in bikinis.

When he decided to learn the guitar, Abasi said his father was "completely liberal about the entire thing and encouraging and proud" and that, in fact, he bought him his first guitar. However, his mother had a more conservative outlook going into his mother's life. "My mother certainly portrays more of the traditional immigrant mentality of education, and traditional television shows are much more relevant than a creative endeavor," Tosin said in an interview.

He played for the Silver Spring, Maryland-based metal band PSI before joining Reflux, a progressive metalcore band. Prosthetic Records spotted his talent and offered him a solo artist contract at a Reflux show. He declined at first, claiming that he didn't feel confident with his knowledge enough to write his own newspaper. Abasi enrolled in the Atlanta Institute of Music and Media, a non-profit school, later in life. After graduating, he called Prosthetic Records to ask if the job was still open. Animals as Leaders was his first "solo" project, referring to the book Ishmael.

Misha Mansoor (of Periphery), who produced and recorded the album with Tosin, also coded the drums, recorded the first Animals as Leaders in 2009. After the completion of the album, Javier Reyes and Navene Koperweis were enlisted on rhythm guitar and drums, respectively, transforming the project into a full touring band. When looking for a permanent replacement, he toured with Born of Osiris as a stand-in guitarist for former member Matt Pantelis.

Tosin's Animals As Leaders bandmate Javier Reyes, Suicidal Tendencies drummer Eric Moore, and former Mars Volta wind instrumentalist Adrián Terrazas-González began assembling material for his new band, T.R.A.M., in 2011. "T.R.A.M." says the author. Terrazas, Reyes, Abasi, Moore stand out. T.R.A.M. South by Southwest, a multi-day music festival in Austin, Texas, played their first show. Tosin said he founded T.R.A.M. As a trio consisting of himself, Javier, and Adrian, he had written an article that did not fit with Animals as Leaders. Eric Moore was not inserted in the band until the album's recording phase, and he wrote and performed all the drums on the album in a few weeks.

On November 8, 2011, Animals as Leaders released Weightless, their second album. Abasi was reportedly speaking with Misha Mansoor in late 2012, and it was revealed that a new Animals as Leaders album was in the works, and that a new Animals as Leaders album was going to be released in 2013.

The Ibanez TAM 100, Tosin Abasi's signature guitar, was unveiled at NAMM 2013. This guitar is based on the Ibanez RG2228 model, which he had been using for some years, and it includes his signature DiMarzio Ionizer pickups.

The Animals As Leaders album The Joy of Motion was released on March 19, 2014, on YouTube. Sumerian Records debuted in Europe on March 25, 2014, and in Australia and New Zealand on March 28, 2014. The album received overwhelmingly favorable feedback. Tosin appeared in the first episode of Guitar Power, a web-series funded by D'Addario String and Rolling Stone Magazine, in July 2014.

He was on tour with Animals As Leaders as of March 2014. In October 2014, it was revealed that Abasi would accompany Joe Satriani, Guthrie Govan, and Mike Keneally on the G4 tour in 2015.

Abasi spent six months in April and May 2016 as part of Nuno Bettencourt, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Valiant, and Zakk Wylde, as part of the Generation Axe tour. In 2017, the supergroup returned to Asia and North America once more in 2018.

Abasi, according to Bill & Ted Face the Music, was the musician behind the "air guitar" shredding in August 2020.

Animals as Leaders (album) was released in late March 2022, but most optimistic analysts maintain that the album is not the band's best work: Pitchfork gave the album a 3/10, noting the album as a step toward a refinement of the company's style; Guitar.com gave the work a 4 out of 5 stars.

After leaving Ibanez Guitars in 2017, Abasi wanted to develop his style and include options like locking tuners and 6 string options. As a result, Abasi Concepts, Abasi Guitars, began as Abasi Guitars, Ltd., offers a variety of 6, 7, 8, and 8 string guitars with his unique ergonomic shape, locking tuners, signature Fishman pickups, and unique wood combinations. Abasi started with Frank Falbo, but the builder suffered with a public snaildown due to business concerns. Abasi Concepts Ltd, as the manufacturer of their Legion Series, Dyna Gakki, and Grover Jackson Engineering were among the suppliers for their JLarada Series and Space Telecaster (shortened to Space T) series. Abasi Concepts enriched their product line in 2022 by debuting the single-cut Emi.
