Tory Lanez's debut mixedtape T.L.O.O.M. was released in 2009. While Lanez lived in South Florida, he began producing some of his music videos and posting them on his YouTube channel. After seeing a video of him freestyling over Lloyd Banks' "Beamer, Benz, or Bentley," Sean Kingston became involved in Lanez. Kingston contacted Lanez in February 2010, inviting him to visit him during Justin Bieber's tour and later convincing him to appear on stage. Just Landed, One Verse One Hearse, Playing for Keeps and Mr. 1 Verse Killah were among Lanez' mixtapes, including Mr. 1 Verse Killah. Lanez signed a record deal with Kingston's Time is Money Entertainment in 2011 and revealed the mixtapes, Mr. Peterson, Chixtape, and Swavey. He later left the label to be a free artist. Tory Lanez produced the mixtape in 2012. Sincerely Tory, Conflicts of My Soul: The 416 Story in 2013, and Chixtape II in 2014. Tory released two episodes of the "Public Swave Announcement" in April 2014, profiling the scenes of the "What Happens Tour" with G-Eazy and Rockie Fresh. Lanez released "Teyana" as a tribute to singer Teyana Taylor on June 2, 2014. "Dreams of Fuckin' an R&B Bitch," Taylor responded on track, "Dreams of Fuckin" an R&B Bitch." Lanez announced on June 6, 2014 that "The Godfather," a song to announce that he would start a series called Fargo Fridays, but that he would not be releasing songs, albums, or videos on Fridays on HotNewHipHop.com. He released "The Mission" as a result of the series's success, a new album was released on August 14, 2014. Tory Lanez and ASAP Ferg collaborated on "Line Up the Flex" on April 8, 2016, promoting their "Level Up" tour. Tory Lanez refused to be on the 2016 XXL Freshman cover because he felt he was in a higher league musically than the other artists being considered. Lanez joined Jamaican reggae singer Buju Banton for a remix of "Trust" on March 20, 2020.

Lanez hosted "Quarantine Radio" on his Instagram Live during the quarantine lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lanez's first release as an independent artist after separating from Interscope Records on May 14, 2020, he released "Temperature Rising" on his own One Umbrella imprint, marking his debut as an independent artist. Lanez' label Signee VV$ Ken released three singles, "Simple Things," with DJDS and Rema, "Staccato," and "392," on July 10, with his label name Lanez. VVS Capsule, the former two songs, was released as an EP.
