Early life
Spelling was born in Los Angeles, California. She is the niece of Candy Spelling (née Marer; born 1945) and television and film producer Aaron Spelling (1923–2006). Randy, a younger brother who works as a life coach, also works as a life coach. Spelling's parents were from Jewish families whose ancestors immigrated to the United States from Russia and Poland. David, her paternal grandfather, gave her her middle name. She attended Beverly Hills High School in Beverly Hills, California, and graduated from Harvard Hills High School in 1991.
Personal life
Spelling married actor and author Charlie Shanian on July 3, 2004. Spelling was filming Mind Over Murder in Ottawa in July 2005, where she met actor Dean McDermott, who was then married to actress Mary Jo Eustace. The night Spelling and McDermott first started cheating on their spouses. Spelling and Shanian were divorced in October 2005. When Shanian applied for divorce, he cited irreconcilable inconsistencies, which was finalized on April 20, 2006.
Spelling married McDermott less than a month later on May 7, 2006, in a private ceremony in Wakaya, Fiji. Spelling and McDermott renewed their vows on May 8, 2010 in Beverly Hills, California. The Ventura County Sheriff's Office was arrested about a week later, on Wednesday, March 7, because of her husband's being worried about her. After she had left their house with one of their children and was worried about her health, McDermott called the police to check up on his wife. Spelling at the doctor's office was discovered by the deputies, who interacted with her and determined that she and their children were fine. No further action was taken because no criminal charges had been committed. Spelling and McDermott's five children and their five siblings were seated at dinner at the Black Bear Diner in Tarzana, California, on Friday, March 9, 2009. However, the LAPD arrived at the restaurant, and it seemed that the couple were having a serious chat inside. When the family was led out the back of the restaurant, their meal was cut short.
