Early life
Anthony J. Mahavoric was born in North Hollywood, California, on February 29, 1960. Robbins is the eldest of three children, and his parents divorced when he was seven years old. He is of Croatian origins from both sides of his family. His mother returned to him several times, including a marriage with Jim Robbins, a former semi-professional baseball player who lawfully adopted Anthony when he was 12 years old.
Robbins grew ten inches in a year in high school, an improvement spurt later attributed to a pituitary tumor. His home life was described as "chaotic" and "abusive," according to him. He went back to school and never recovered when he was 17 years old. Robbins remained a janitor after leaving college and did not go to college. He asked the landlord, who was a family friend, how he became so popular one day. After going to a Jim Rohn seminar, the landlord told him that he started to turn his life around.
Personal life
After meeting Rebecca Jenkins at a seminar in 1984, Robbins married her. Jenkins had three children from two previous marriages, both of whom Robbins adopted. In 1998, Robbins and Jenkins filed for divorce.
Robbins fathered a child with Liz Acosta, a former girlfriend of 1981. Jairek Robbins, the family's son, is also a personal development coach and trainer.
Robbins married Bonnie Humphrey in October 2001. They live in Manalapan, Florida. Bonnie renamed her name to Sage. During 2022, Tony and Sage welcomed their first child.
Robbins was a vegetarian for a year, but he then introduced fish to his diet. He suffered mercury poisoning and almost died while on a fish-heavy diet. His diet now consists mainly of vegetables with a small amount of animal protein.
Career
Robbins began promoting seminars for motivational speaker and author Jim Rohn when he was 17 years old. He subsequently learned to firewalk and incorporated it into his seminars.
In 2014, Robbins joined a group of investors to acquire rights to launch a Major League Soccer franchise in Los Angeles referred to as the Los Angeles Football Club. The soccer team entered competition in 2018.
In 2016, Robbins partnered with Golden State Warriors co-owner Peter Guber and Washington Wizards co-owner Ted Leonsis to purchase Team Liquid, an eSports professional gaming organization.
Robbins has worked on an individual basis with Bill Clinton, Justin Tuck, Hugh Jackman, and Pitbull. He has counseled American businessmen Peter Guber, Steve Wynn, and Marc Benioff.
Robbins was criticized for comments alluding to the Me Too movement at a seminar in San Jose, California, on March 15, 2018, when he said: "If you use the #MeToo movement to try to get significance and certainty by attacking and destroying someone else… all you've done is basically use a drug called significance to make yourself feel good." He went on to tell a story about a "very powerful man" who passed on hiring a female candidate even though she was the most qualified because she was too attractive and would be "too big a risk". He later posted an apology on his Facebook page.
