Education and early career
Tony Hayward was born in Slough, Buckinghamshire, (now Berkshire), in 1957; the eldest son of Bryan and Mary Hayward. Tony has five sisters and one brother. Growing up, Tony moved frequently, but not until a child was born in or near Slough. When his sixth sibling was born, Tony moved out of the family home and started living in Langley (a suburb of Slough). His family and his family migrated to Bournemouth, Dorset, later in life. Tony, on the other hand, remained in Berkshire with his grandparents and attended Slough Technical High School until he began attending university. Tony obtained a first-class geology degree from Aston University and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh School of Geosciences. He joined BP in 1982, working in Aberdeen as a rig geologist, and he quickly moved up the ranks in a string of scientific and commercial roles in BP Exploration in London, Aberdeen, France, China, and Glasgow. During a 1990 leadership conference in Phoenix, Arizona, Hayward first caught Lord Browne's attention. As a result, Browne was named Browne's executive assistant.
Hayward began as an exploration manager in Colombia in 1992 and became president of BP's Venezuela operations in 1995. He returned to London as a director of BP Exploration in August 1997. In 1999, he became the group vice president of BP Amoco Exploration and Production as well as a member of the BP group's Upstream executive committee.
Hayward was appointed as the BP group treasurer in September 2000, where his responsibilities included global treasurer operations, foreign exchange operations, corporate finance, project finance, and mergers and acquisitions. In April 2002, Hayward became an executive vice president and chief executive of exploration and production in January 2003.
