Early life
Goldwyn was born in Los Angeles, California, and the son of actor Jennifer Howard and film director Samuel Goldwyn Jr. Goldwyn's paternal grandparents, according to actress Julia Goldwyn, was born in Warsaw, Poland, and actress Frances Howard, who was born in Nebraska. Sidney Howard and actress Clare Eames were both born in the United States and England. Governor William Thomas Hamilton of Maryland was one of his maternal great-grandfathers. Goldwyn studied at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts (where he obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree) and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Career
Following his release from drama school, Goldwyn began acting in guest star roles in the mid-1980s. In the fantasy thriller film Ghost, Goldwyn had his breakthrough role playing Carl Bruner, a friend-turned-betrayer of Patrick Swayze's character Sam Wheat. Positive feedback followed the film and it was named Best Original Screenplay by the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Goldwyn received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role. Goldwyn appeared on the comedy series Designing People, in which he played Kendall Dobbs, an HIV-positive man who was dying from AIDS and requesting that the women of Sugarbakers design his funeral. In the HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon, Goldwyn played astronaut Neil Armstrong, the Apollo 11 commander.
