Tony Butler Career

Career

Butler was part of the short-lived band On the Air, which also included drummer Mark Brzezicki and Simon Townshend (the younger brother of The Who's guitarist Pete Townshend). Butler performed on the air in 1980 and toured with the Scottish band The Skids, which was where Butler met Stuart Adamson. Butler and his drumming partner Mark Brzezicki formed Big Country in 1982, and the group went on to have success throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and The Pretenders were among other performers who performed, and Chrissie Hynde declined an invitation to join The Pretenders. Butler's warm-up bass riff was included in The Pretenders' "My City Was Gone" and was also co-opted by The Rush Limbaugh Show as the pretender's opening theme.

Butler reunited with founders Bruce Watson and Mark Brzezicki in 2007 to embark on a tour of the United Kingdom to commemorate 25 years of Big Country. For the first time, he took over for lead vocalist Stuart Adamson. During 2010-2011, the band toured with Mike Peters of The Alarm on vocals. Butler left Big Country in 2012, citing differences with his bandmates as the reason for his departure, but former Simple Minds bassist Derek Forbes took over.

Butler and his family moved to Cornwall in the 1980s and became a secondary education coach in the 2000s. Butler taught music at Petroc College in Devon as of 2017.

Although Butler did not join The Pretenders permanently, he did a few sessions with the Pretenders, one of which included the 1982 singles "My City Was Gone" and "Back on the Chain Gang."

Butler's autobiography and a solo album My Time were released in 2017/18.
