Early life and education
Tommy Ton was born in Oakville, Ontario, to Vietnamese Canadian parents. When Ton was 13 years old, his sister begged him to record FashionTelevision. Tom Ford appeared in Ton's segment, where Ford began expressing his views on women and sexuality. Ton's fashion journey began after being impressed by Ford's ability to speak eloquently with deliberately chosen words from his collection.
Although Ton did not receive formal education in photography, he learned himself by attending digital photography workshops and networking with friends who did graphic design to pursue a career in fashion and photography.
Professional career
He began working in various fields of fashion after his newfound passion. Despite his youth, Wayne Clark, a local fashion designer, interned with Wayne Clark, which resulted in his first job at a posh Canadian department store Holt Renfrew's women's accessories branch. He was discovered by Barbara Atkin, Vice President of Fashion Direction of Holt Refrew, during his time in the women's accessories division, which eventually led to him working in the department store's buying department, furthering his fashion work.
Ton conceived Jak & Jil in 2005, being inspired by the emergence of online journals. The website was designed to be a lifestyle website showcasing products and people in Toronto. Despite being different from Jak & Jil's new iteration, it attracted the attention of local business owner Lynda Latner. Latner has a website and a showroom that sells high-end vintage clothing. Ton was hired to assist Latner in growing her company. In 2007, Latner offered Ton to London and Paris for fashion week, his first chance to extend his practice internationally. Ton was sick of photographing head-to-toe, which became the norm of documenting street style popularized by Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist and Asian street-style websites and blogs. Ton began taking candid photographs in an effort to visually and conceptually distinguish his images from those of other style blogs. He preferred landscape oriented rather than portrait oriented photography and concentrated on the garment's finer (such as contrasting patterns of the coat's lining or intricate details of the heels) rather than the whole ensemble. He updated his website to its new blog style in order to better reflect and emphasize his fashion week photographs. Ton's latest approach to street style photography, as well as a redesigned website, attracted the attention of other bloggers, such as Susanna Lau of Style Bubble, and increased the number of people interested in his photography.
Lane Crawford, a Hong Kong-based high-end retailer chain, was hired by Ton to shoot their Spring/Summer 2009 campaign. Ton and coworkers, Bryanboy, Garance Doré, and Scott Schuman were invited to appear on the front row of a Dolce and Gabbana fashion preview in 2009. This moment marked a paradigm shift in fashion journalism. Ton was hired by other fashion companies to film their fashion shows following the Dolce and Gabbana exhibitions. In addition,, New York Times and The Boston Globe began requesting and photographing his photographs, raising his public profile in fashion media.
Dirk Standen, the editor-in-chief of Style.com and GQ, asked Ton to cover fashion week. Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist, who had previously worked in the role, was planning to abandon to concentrate on his personal interests. Ton has been the most influential source of fashion week street style reporting for both Style.com and GQ since then, effectively making him the de facto photographer of record for fashion week street style.
Ton released his website, Tommyton.com, on September 2nd, 2015, announcing that he would not be joining Vogue Runway, which scooped up some senior editorial employees from Style.com, including Nicole Phelps, and launched on September 1, 2015. Rather, Ton will cover shows independently. Ton's website showcases more than 15,000 Ton-lensed photographs from the past decade, including those from Style.com, GQ.com, and photographer Jak & Jil's former blog, Jak & Jil. In addition, Ton published numerous unpublished photographs and proposals on publishing new and exclusive images every week, among which readers can filter images by color, brand, trend, and subject.
