Thomas Frank La Stella (born January 31, 1989) is an American professional baseball infielder for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball (MLB).

The Atlanta Braves selected La Stella in the eighth round of the 2011 MLB Draft.

He made his MLB debut with the Braves in 2014, and was traded to the Chicago Cubs before the 2015 season.

Life and career

Thomas Frank La Stella was born in Westwood, New Jersey, on January 31, 1989, to Jane and Phil La Stella. He and his two siblings grew up in Closter, New Jersey, near Closter, New Jersey. He is of Italian descent.

La Stella attended Saint Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, New Jersey. He played baseball in high school but he resigned after his junior year, citing burnout.

He enrolled at St. John's University, where he played for the St. John's Red Storm for one year before heading to Coastal Carolina University to play for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. In 2010-2011, La Stella appeared in 125 games (all started) for the Chanticleers, hitting.388 with 28 home runs and 136 runs batted in (RBIs). In 509 attempts for Coastal Carolina, he made 12 errors, resulting in a.976 field percentage. In 2010, he played collegiate summer baseball for the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

In the eighth round of the 2011 MLB draft, the Atlanta Braves selected La Stella. He joined the Braves and spent the remainder of the 2011 season with the Rome Braves of the Class A South Atlantic League. In 2012, he competed for the Lynchburg Hillcats of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League. He appeared for the Mississippi Braves of the Class AA Southern League in 2013. In 81 games, La Stella had a.343 batting average.

In 2014, the Braves welcomed La Stella to spring training. He began the 2014 season with the Gwinnett Braves of the Class AAA International League, and made his debut in his first game on May 28. La Stella's first major league home run came against Stephen Strasburg of the Washington Nationals on August 8, 2014. In 93 games, he had a.251 batting average.

The Braves traded La Stella, as well as an international signing bonus slot, to the Chicago Cubs for Arodys Vizcaya and three international signing bonus slots on November 16, 2014. La Stella made the Cubs' Opening Day roster but played in two games before strained his right oblique, which occurred on April 10, 2015. La Stella sustained another oblique strain while rehabilitating with the Tennessee Smokies in the minor leagues. In August, he was released from the disabled list and was sent by the Iowa Cubs of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League. He was recalled from Iowa and rejoined the major league club on August 24. La Stella was mainly used as a pinch hitter in limited time with Chicago, a position in which he excelled. La Stella began playing third base in the regular season to increase his versatility. During La Stella's National League Wild Card Game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, she ran.269/.324/.403/.403.403.

The Cubs optioned La Stella to Iowa on July 29, but he did not immediately report after hitting.295 for the Cubs in 2016. La Stella was put on the Cubs' temporarily inactive list. On August 17, he promised to report to Tennessee. La Stella, who was recalled on August 31, said that his inability to report to the minors largely owed to a lack of enthusiasm for the game at the time of his demotion. La Stella batted.270/.405 in 74 games of the 2016 season, with two home runs and 11 RBIs. The Cubs won the 2016 World Series. During the 2016 postseason, La Stella had one at bat. La Stella was on the roster for the 2016 National League Division Series, but Rob Zastryzny was swapped for the 2016 National League Championship Series by left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny. Kyle Schwarber was given the final spot on the roster for the 2016 World Series.

In 2017, La Stella appeared in 73 games for the Cubs. He finished the year off with a batting average of five home runs and a career high of 22 RBIs.

In a lopsided win by the St. Louis Cardinals, La Stella pitched an inning and a third as a relief pitcher on July 20, 2018. Thad Bosley and Dave Clark hit the Cubs in the seventh inning of their season on August 31, his 21st pinch-hit of the season, a single in the seventh inning. La Stella had a 2 run go-ahead home run against the Atlanta Braves the previous evening. He batted.266/.331 with one home run and 19 RBIs in 169 at bats for the 2018 season.

The Cubs flipped La Stella to the Los Angeles Angels for future considerations on November 29, 2018. La Stella was their regular second baseman and leadoff man with a slash line of.301/.611. With 11 home runs and 25 RBIs, he was one of the league's best players. La Stella had been chosen to play in the 2019 All-Star Game, but he fractured his tibia on a foul ball on July 2nd. La Stella had been one of the Angels' most active players before the injury. In 78 games, he had a.300 batting average with 16 home runs and 44 RBIs. In two of the Angels' final three games, La Stella did not return until late September.

The Angels traded La Stella to the Oakland Athletics for Franklin Barreto on August 28, 2020.

He batted.281/.449 with five home runs and 25 RBIs in 2020, and was by a wide margin the toughest AL ballplayer to strike out, averaging 16.3 at bats per strike out. With four, he led all AL second basemen in mistakes.

La Stella signed a three-year, $18.75 million deal with the San Francisco Giants on February 4, 2021; his 2021 salary was $2 million. With a hamstring strain, he was put on the 60-day hospitalization list on May 18.

He batted.250/.405 with 26 runs, 7 home runs, and 20 RBIs in 220 at bats in the 2021 regular season. With five games at third base, he was mainly a second baseman.

In late October, La Stella had offseason Achilles surgery and was expected to recover in four months in the middle of 2022 spring training. La Stella was recalled off the injured list and made his season debut against the Colorado Rockies on May 16, 2022.
