Tommy Gainey Career

Professional career

Gainey made a name for herself in 1997 and spent the next two years on smaller tours in the southern United States. Gainey has won four events on the Egolf Tarheel Tour, two in 2006 and one in 2007. He won an event on the NGA Hooters Tour as well as playing on the Gateway Tour.

Gainey appeared on the Golf Channel's show The Big Break IV: USA vs. Europe in 2005, being eliminated in the sixth episode. He will compete at Reunion in 2007 for the Big Break VII: Reunion, which he won. Gainey attended four events on the Nationwide Tour in 2007 and received one top-ten finish. After going through all three elimination stages of qualifying, a total of 14 rounds, he earned a PGA Tour card by graduating from Q-School, winning the six rounds T-19. That made him the first Big Break alumnus to be granted a PGA Tour card.

Gainey appeared on the PGA Tour for the first time in 2008, but the majority of the year fell, but it wasn't a success. Before attending the Children's Miracle Network Classic at the Walt Disney World Resort, he made only five cuts in 23 events and was 228th on the money list. In the last round, playing the Magnolia Course, he shot a 64 and finished second to Davis Love III by a stroke. Gainey's finish pushed him over the top of the money list (to 148th, an 80-spot leap), granting him conditional status for the 2009 season. Gainey re-entered the Q-School to try and regain full playing rights, but the T80th overall ranked highest in the leaderboard. In 2009, he split his time between the PGA Tour and Countrywide Tour, only surviving on the PGA Tour, making just 8 out of 15 cuts, with one top-five finish. He finished the year 202nd on the money list, not even receiving conditional status for 2010.

Gainey made his return to the Nationwide Tour in 2010, where he appeared for the entire season. He had a field day at the Melwood Prince George's County Open in June, achieving his first Nationwide Tour victory. Gainey won the tournament by a single stroke over Frank Lickliter and Jin Park, with weekend rounds of 64 and 65 securing victory. Gainey captured his second Nationwide Tour title at the Chiquita Classic in August, defeating Joe Affrunti by three strokes over three months. In round three, he shot a 10 under round of 62, netting the win by a score of 62. He finished fourth on the Nationwide Tour money list and gained a return to the PGA Tour in 2011.

Gainey missed the cut in his first three appearances in 2011, and then made six straight cuts until the end of March. He was in contention late in the final round of the 2011 Waste Management Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Arizona, but he finished tied for 8th on the par-4 17th hole. A month later, he finished fifth at the Honda Classic in Florida in fifth place. Gainey's best 2011 Tour finish came at The Heritage in Hilton Head, South Carolina, where he needed a 15-foot putt on the 72nd green to tie clubhouse leader Brandt Snedeker but was disqualified for the event in third place. Gainey finished third in a tie for third at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where he placed two strokes outside of a playoff. Gainey qualified to compete in his first major championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club in August, after his strong play for the year. He shot rounds of 81 and 74 to miss the cut, but he bounced back to third-place finish at the Wyndham Championship next week. Gainey had placed in the top three in an event on three occasions in 2011. The result brought him to a career peak of 84th in the world rankings. Gainey came to a T3rd finish at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in the Fall Series, his first year in the profession. On the money list, Gainey came in 35th in the year 35th. In 34 events, there were 17 cuts and 7 top-10s.

Gainey started the 2012 season slowly, making only three of his first ten cuts and having to cancel twice due to injury. He did not finish in top ten at the Crowne Plaza Invitational in Colonial until May, where he came in third for the fifth time in his PGA Tour career. Gainey's overall season was better, with nine of the next 13 cuts being cut, but with no significant progress. Gainey won his first PGA Tour event at the McGladrey Classic on October 21, 2012, after 105 starts and 48 cuts made. After shooting a final round of 60, he came from seven strokes behind last round leaders Jim Furyk and Davis Love III to win by one from David Toms. On the 18th green for a 59, Gainey had a putt from about 20 feet, but it didn't get a 59 on the right hand side.

Gainey won the Korn Ferry Classic in January 2020, his first professional victory since 2012. His winning score was 277 (11-under-par) and he was under the age of 21. After a T76 finish at Q School, he started the season on the PGA Tour as a past champion and on the Korn Ferry Tour.
