Early life and education

Thomas George Cassell was born in Manchester, England, on June 23rd, 1993, and he is the uncle of Alice Cassell. His father worked as a project manager, and Karen Cassell, his mother, worked as a children's day care worker. Cassell was educated at the Blue Coat school in nearby Oldham and sold alcohol at school to buy a 42-inch plasma television at the age of 15, as his father wanted him to work and pay for the items he wanted at the time. In 2010, he enrolled in Hyde Clarendon Sixth Form College in Ashton-under-Lyne, where he studied computer design and video game development.

"I loved Call of Duty, I'm making videos, and maybe in the future this will be my job," Cassell said on YouTube. Since leaving college, he briefly worked at McDonald's and used his spare money to film YouTube videos, saying he was "slaving away" during that time. He later resigned from his career and after gaining a substantial following, his father and college tutor encouraged him to work as an online gaming consultant.

Personal life

Cassell owns a house that he and his father designed and built. At the age of 19, he became a homeowner and said he likes to be near his hometown. The idea for the purchase arose from his fascination with British television series Grand Designs, and he explained that he reconstructed the house in favour of creating a more gaming-like space. Fans gained synthesis from Cassell's college route and Google Street View to locate his place of residence, according to BBC North West Tonight. Cassell dated Kaitlin Witcher in 2012 and maintained secrecy for his personal life as he had distinguished the ones that threatened his fame from his own. He was worried that his family would profit from his presence and earn money from his collaboration videos with him.

In June 2020, Kaitlin Witcher (Cassell's ex-girlfriend) and Natalie Casanova filed a report of sexual assault against Cassell, as part of the #MeToo campaign. Casanova said the incident occurred at a Legends of Gaming convention in Los Angeles in 2016, in which she and Cassell were involved and where one of Cassell's employees took her a morning-after pill the next day. In 2012, the witcher said she was abused at a hotel in the same city. Cassell replied, referring to the situation as "character assassination by social media." He argued that the sex was consensual, and that Casanova had agreed to take the pills. Cassell, who felt empathetic at the time, sympathized with Wither's statement.

Tom Cassell Career

Internet career

Cassell wrote commentary videos on various websites for three years as a hobby before his initial success and the launch of his main game channel on YouTube, using his school holidays to make them in his spare time. He started filming his gaming commentary with his father's camera and crafted it with video game cases to point it at the television. He then bought a film camera in 2008 to film his gameplay, in which he was inspired by no-scope sniper kills on Call of Duty from a friend. Cassell outlined that video capturing content for YouTube was prohibitive and that there were few content creators thriving on the site at this time. Shaun Hutchinson's videos piqued his interest, as he was inspired by the possibility of establishing a persona by a blend of both commentary and gameplay.

Cassell's gaming YouTube channel "SyndicateProject" (renamed as "Syndicate") on September 3, 2010 and his Twitch channel "Syndicate" on October 17, 2010, cassell's "SyndicateProject") following his gaming attempts. When Cassell was sent a job offer by an email from multi-channel network (MCN) Machinima, he had amassed around 300,000 views on his Call of Duty games. This was the start of his career as a gamer. For the first time after surpassing 500,000 viewers, Minecraft's Play sequence and Trinity Island were included in his game, as well as the Twitch film Mianite, in which Cassell's storyline is told through the game with fellow streamers such as Jordan Maron and Sonja Reid.

Will Porter, a Eurogamer, praised Cassell's increasing fame, drawing Call of Duty publisher Activision's attention during a 2011 GameCity convention. "I'd have to say [game developers have been] slow,] Cassell reflected on his experience of being out of place: "I'd have to say [game developers have been] poor—there's been a lot of feedback on Call of Duty or other games." Cassell forged links between YouTube and video game critique, in which he said that support from a large company "is the best thing ever" and referred to corprate recognition's success and significance. On September 24, 2011, Cassell's life on Tom YouTube channel "Life of Tom" was launched. His gaming channel attracted over 700,000 viewers, making him the most subscribed game commentator and director in the United Kingdom. He began vlogging in Los Angeles and the United Kingdom, and began to receive travel and clothing as part of the contracts. He reflected that his established gaming presence had a huge influence on the beginning of a vlogging career as it opened to new ventures.

Cassell's game channel had reached 7.6 million subscribers in July, and Gamasutra had ranked it as the 6th most popular gaming channel on YouTube. Cassell's uploads were "watched by millions of people around the world," BBC North West Tonight reported after four years of his gaming channel had been licensed. On August 17, where he passed the Riot Games channel to the first million followers, his Twitch channel became the first to reach one million followers, where he also set the channel for Riot Games to the record before. Subsequently, The Guardian announced that Cassell had reached 120,000 concurrent viewers on a Call of Duty livestream through Twitch on August 24, capping an event.

Cassell signed to MCN Jetpak by 3BlackDot in November as the service went live for a new payment scheme. Gamasutra also announced that Cassell's game Dead Realm, which did not comply with FTC regulations regarding a disclosure of sponsorship information, had been published on Gamasutra. Cassell was not charged with any financial charges.
