Tom Rush Career

Life and career

Rush was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, United States, and the son of a teacher at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. After graduating from the Groton School, he began performing in 1961 while attending Harvard University. He concentrated on English literature. Many of his early recordings are recreations of Lowland Scots and Appalachian folk songs. He worked at the Cambridge, Massachusetts, Unicorn, and the Main Point in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He lived in Deering, New Hampshire, New Hampshire, in the 1970s.

Rush is credited by Rolling Stone magazine with ushering in the singer-songwriter period. He performed his own compositions, as well as writing songs by Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Murray McLauchlan, David Wiffen, and William Hawkins, assisting them in gaining notoriety early in their careers.

His 1968 composition "No Regrets" has become a standard, with several different cover versions (Rush did two very different versions himself). The Walker Brothers, who praised Tom Rush Top Ten as a songwriter on the UK Singles Chart, Emmylou Harris, who performed the song on her 1988 album Bluebird, and Midge Ure, who made the UK Top Ten, among others.

A video of Steven Walters' "The Remember Song" performance on YouTube was posted on March 1, 2007 and the site has since received over 7 million views as of April 2017.

Writing on his website, Rush said,

Elektra's website hosts one of the first music videos made for an artist (1968) by an artist. For his The Circle Game album, it was used to advertise his hit song, "No Regrets." A collection of recent videos from a 2010 concert in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, can be found online.

Tom Rush is married to author Renée Askins and was previously married to singer Beverly Rush.

Rush has played a variety of guitars on stage, his most popular one being a handcrafted acoustic made by Don Musser. Rush performed in Colorado in February 2012 with a new weapon, a cedar-top Dreadnought with an inlay of a snake wrapped around a reclining nude woman. The guitar, crafted by McKenzie & Marr Guitars, is a "re-incarnation" of one of Rush's oldest acoustics, "Naked Lady."

Rush appeared at Boston Symphony Hall on December 28, 2012 to commemorate 50 years in the music industry.

Voices from Rush's new album Voices was released in 2018. He has frequently toured the United States in recent years, often with Berklee graduate Matt Nakoa on piano.
