In 1972, he appeared in The cast of fledgling soap opera Number 96 as Janie Somers' new beau Jack Sellars. Oliver became one of the most popular cast members of Number 96. During his time on the show, he married Lynn Rainbow, a 96 actor who played Sonia Vansard and opened a wine bar in Kensington, Sydney cunningly named Jack's Cellar. He reprised his television appearance in a Number 96 spinoff of the serial in late 1973, as well as a portion of the show's regular cast, including Rainbow. Oliver was written out of the program in 1996, but the show's producers retorted after receiving numerous petitions from fans, and he was soon reintroduced. He was the show's longest serving actor by 2009, both in continuous and total terms. Oliver changed his role on Neighbours to a part-time regular cast member from the 2009 season. Oliver appeared in a documentary special on the 30th anniversary of the show The Stars Reunite, which aired in Australia and the United Kingdom in March 2015. Oliver had to put his reputation as Lou further in 2015, and would only appear as a visitor from time to time. Oliver resigned from the role after 24 years in October 2016, and his last appearance aired in December 2016.

Lou did not appear in the series finale, but there was also a mention of his character in the form of "T Oliver" in a lawyers' office. Jason Herbison, an executive, later revealed that he had personally called Oliver to inform him about the final episode, but Oliver turned it down because he was "at a different time in his life now."
