Recording career
Morello, who played guitar in the mid-1980s, was a member of Lock Up, a rock band. Something Bitchin' This Way Comes, the band's debut album, was released by major label Geffen Records in 1989. Until Morello's inception of Rage Against the Machine, Lock Up had disbanded.
Morello was trying to form a new band after Lock Up disbanded in 1991. Morello was captivated by Zack de la Rocha's freestyle rapping and begged to join his band. Brad Wilk, whom he recognized from Lock Up, where Wilk unsuccessfully applied for a drumming position, was also drafted drummer Brad Wilk, who came from Lock Up. When Zack convinced his childhood friend Tim Commerford to play bass, the band's line was complete. Rage Against the Machine, a fan of the Los Angeles club circuit, has signed a historic deal with Epic Records in 1992. The band's self-titled debut was released the same year. They had a significant following outside of mainstream music and released three more studio albums: Evil Empire in 1996, The Battle of Los Angeles in 1999, and Renegades in 2000.
Rage Against the Machine performed outside the Staples Center in August 2000, drawing a crowd of thousands as the Convention took place inside. The Los Angeles Police Department put off the guns and ordered the audience to disperse, pouring rubber bullets and pepper spray into the crowd after several people began to throw rocks.
The disgruntled de la Rocha resigned from the band in late 2000, amid controversies over the band's direction and Commerford's stunt at the VMA's. Rage Against the Machine's last concert at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles on September 13, 2000. Although Rage Against the Machine officially ended in October 2000, the band's fourth studio album, Renegades, became a series of cover songs from artists including Bob Dylan, MC5, Bruce Springsteen, and Cypress Hill. Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, the band's final two concerts on September 12 and 13, 2000, sold as part of the band's last album, titled Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium. The last show was followed by an extended DVD edition of the last show as well as a previously unreleased music video for "Bombtrack."
Morello, Wilk, and Commerford all disbanded, and together with then-former Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, the band's concert in Cuba has released three albums and a DVD. De la Rocha began working on a solo album collaboration with DJ Shadow, Company Flow, and Roots' Questlove, but the initiative was shelved in favour of working with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. The recording was completed, but the album will no longer be released. So far, only two songs have been released: "We Want It All" was on "Songs and Artists That Inspired Fahrenheit 9/11," and "Digging For Windows" was released as a single.
Rage Against the Machine, a youth from Houston, was reunited at the Coachella Music Festival on April 29, 2007. To the biggest audiences of the festival, the band performed in front of an EZLN backdrop. The appearance was expected to be a one-off, but it didn't turn out to be the case. In 2007, the band appeared in seven more shows in the United States (including their first non-festival performance in seven years at the Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, Wisconsin), and in January 2008, they appeared for the first time outside of the United States since re-forming as part of the Big Day Out Festival in Australia and New Zealand. They headlined nights at the Reading and Leeds festivals in August 2008.
The band has since toured around the world, headlined numerous major festivals in Europe and the United States, including Lollapalooza in Chicago. In 2008, the band appeared in Denver, Colorado, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, in conjunction with the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention. Rage Against the Machine appeared in Los Angeles in July 2011. The band formed Rising, a Los Angeles-based festival in which they headlined and performed with other performers including Muse and Rise Against.
Rage Against the Machine were reuniting in the spring of 2020, including two appearances at that year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the summer 2020 planned tour was postponed.
The remaining bandmates began working with former Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell on producer Rick Rubin's suggestion after de la Rocha left Rage Against the Machine. The new group was initially thought to be named the Civilian Project, but the name Audioslave was revealed only after their first album was released.
On November 19, 2002, the band's eponymous debut album was released. It was a pivotal and commercial success, with triple-platinum status at the time.
On May 24, 2005, the band's second album, Out of Exile, was released. It debuted on the Billboard charts at number one and gained platinum status. They also released a DVD describing their experience as the first American rock band to perform a free show in Cuba this year. In the fall of 2006, the band's third album, Revelations, was released. As of February 15, 2007, Audioslave had broken up as a result of frontman Cornell's departure due to "irresolvable personality conflicts." Rage Against the Machine, the band reunited with Zack de la Rocha and revived their former band, Rage Against the Machine.
In January 2017, audioslave reunited for just one show, though there were rumors of a reunion tour. However, Cornell's death on May 18, 2017, that had denied such a possibility.
