Career

McRae, the son of two Church of England vicars, performed in the church choir and as a youth, experimented with his mother's guitar. Billy Bragg, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Neil Young, Kate Bush, U2, began to write his own songs and develop his own style, initially attempting to imitate his heroes. He went to City of London Polytechnic, gaining a degree in politics and administration, and forming his first band, "The Ministers of Orgasm," at the age of 18. McRae was a member of "Really Cain" and "Orchid Lounge" later in life. Roger Bechirian, a recording engineer and record producer, met with Elvis Costello, Squeeze, Carlene Carter, The Undertones, which culminated in a professional relationship. Bechirian was instrumental in shaping McRae's soft-spoken sound, which later gained McRae a contract with Dave Bates' db Records (db records). In 2000, director Scott Walker selected McRae to perform at the Meltdown Festival in the Royal Festival Hall. McRae's confessional, self-titled debut appeared in autumn 2001, earning him comparisons to Nick Drake and Bob Dylan. Critics adored and McRae received nominations for the Mercury Prize, a Q magazine award, and the BRIT Award for Best Newcomer. By then, McRae was working with Oliver ("Oli") Kraus, a cellist, and Olli Cunningham was joining her on keyboards in 2003. Just Like Blood, McRae's second album, was released in the United Kingdom in February 2003 by Ben Hillier, whose credits include Elbow, Martha Wainwright, and Blur. McRae then moved to California, where he wrote and recorded his next album, All Maps Welcome, which was released in May 2005.

McRae's 2005 support for Tori Amos on the UK/Ireland leg of her Original Sinsuality Tour. McRae, who appeared in the Hotel Café in Los Angeles and being one of the first Americans on the first National Hotel Cafe Tour, brought the Tour to the United Kingdom in 2006, introducing his followers to many other singer-songwriters, including Steve Reynolds, Joe Purdy, Cary Brothers, and Jim Bianco. The artists appeared in each other's songs at the Hotel Cafe Tour. In addition, Kathryn Williams, Justin Currie, Colin MacIntyre, and Aqualung were among the tour's many special guests.

King of Cards, McRae's fourth album, was recorded in Suffolk and released in May 2007.

McRae brought the Hotel Cafe Tour to the United Kingdom once more in spring 2008, and it also went to continental Europe for the first time. This time, he was joined by Cary Brothers, Brian Wright, Catherine Feeny, Greg Laswell, Jim Bianco, Jim Bianco, and Jason (or Dr.) Kanakis. Eddi Reader and Turin Brakes were among the many guests at each venue, including Eddi Reader and Turin Brakes.

McRae appeared at a number of festivals in the United Kingdom in summer 2008, and had a headline slot at the Offset Festival in August. He toured the North Eastern states of America and Canada in fall 2008.

The Alphabet of Hurricanes, McRae's fifth studio album, was recorded in East London's own recording studio, Gunpoint. The album was released in February 2010, and thanks to a sponsorship with Cooking Vinyl. The "Alphabet of Hurricanes" Tours, which sold out at a number of locations, were postponed to coincide with the album's launch. McRae was involved in the Crossing Border festival in the Netherlands in 2010, performing with the Matangi Quartet, who are based in the Netherlands. Tom at Tut's with songs and banter was released on his second live album at King Tut's Wah Hut in Glasgow in 2004. Tom toured the UK and Europe with a UK string quartet in 2011 and did a solo tour in Germany in the spring. From the Lowlands, Tom's first solo tour in France, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, which attracted sold-out audiences, followed the release of his sixth studio album From the Lowlands, the long-awaited second part of the Alphabet of Hurricanes. In April 2013, a further leg of the solo tour came with the commercial debut of "From the Lowlands."

McRae's instrumental music "14 EMOTIONS/Allegoria Dolorosa" by the Belgian group Spectra Ensemble at the Transformator/Happening (festival of metamorphosis) in Zwevegem, Belgium, took place on September 7th, 2013.

McRae wrote "Love More or Less" for Marianne Faithfull's album "Girrel's album, "Did I Sleep and Miss the Border" in 2014, his seventh album, "Did I Sleep and Miss the Border" was released on 11 May 2015. He continued writing songs and recordings for other musicians, but his eighth album, "Ah, the World," was released. With a companion book and his UK tour to promote the album, Oh, the World" came out in September 2017.
