Tom Aldredge Life

Thomas Ernest Aldredge (February 28, 1928 – July 22, 2011) was an American television, film and stage actor, best known for various appearances in movies, theatre and television, with a notable role as Hugh De Angelis on The Sopranos.

He also appeared in the television shows Damages as Uncle Pete and Ryan's Hope.

He won a Daytime Emmy Award for playing the role of Shakespeare in Henry Winkler Meets William Shakespeare (1978).

His last role was on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, playing the father of Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi).

Personal life

He was married to stage and screen costume designer Theoni V. Aldredge from 1953 until her death on January 21, 2011.

Life and career

Aldredge was born in Dayton, Ohio, the son of Lucienne Juliet (née Marcillat) and William Joseph Aldredge, a colonel in the United States Army Air Corps. He aspired to become a lawyer but he was a Pre-Law student at the University of Dayton in the late 1940s. After attending a preview of A Streetcar Named Desire's first Broadway performance in 1947, he decided to pursue a career as an actor.

Aldredge had a distinguished career on Broadway for five decades, winning five Tony Award nominations out of a total of five. Danny made his Broadway debut in the 1959 musical The Nervous Set. In 1972, he received the Drama Desk Award for his portrayal of Ozzie, the father of a blind Vietnam soldier, in David Rabe's Sticks and Bones. In Richard Rodgers' penultimate musical Rex in 1976, he played Henry VIII's fool, Will Sommers. Norman Thayer Jr. appeared in On Golden Pond in 1978, gaining a Drama Desk Award nomination. In Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into The Woods, his most well-known role was that of the Narrator/Mysterious Man, a role he later reprised in the PBS Great Performances production. In another Sondheim-Lapine collaboration, Passion, he also played the doctor.

He appeared in Inherit the Wind, directed by Tony Randall, in 1997. Brown appeared in an ensemble that also included George C. Scott, Charles Durning, and Anthony Heald.

Theodore Flicker, a 1960s coffee house performer, opened The Premise, a professional Off-Broadway coffee house theater on 154 Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. He recruited Tom Aldredge, Joan Darling, George Segal, and Dolores Welber as the first improvisational cast fielding and responding to audience suggestions.

He spent his 50-year career as a character actor on television and film. In 1978, he received a Daytime Emmy Award for his portrayal of William Shakespeare in the episode Henry Winkler Meets William Shakespeare on The CBS Festival of Young People. Hugh De Angelis, Tony Soprano's father-in-law, appeared on HBO's The Sopranos, his most well-known television role.
