Early life
Tionne Watkins was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on April 26, 1970, to James and Gayle Watkins. She has claimed that she is of African American, Native American, and Irish descent. When she was nine years old, Watkins' family migrated from Des Moines to Atlanta, Georgia.
Personal life
Watkins was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia as a child. Due to the acute illness, she has been in and out of the hospital since the age of seven. In 1996, T-Boz introduced the disease to the public, and she later became one of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America's spokesperson. She was hospitalized for four months following a outbreak of sickle-cell anemia in 2002. She is the national co-chair of the progressive group Health Care Voter.
Watkins married rapper Mack 10. Chase Anela Rolison, the couple's daughter, was born prematurely on October 20, 2000, just a few months later. She filed for divorce in June 2004 and requested a restraining order against Mack 10. In 2012, Watkins and Chase moved from Atlanta to Los Angeles, California, in order for Chase to be closer to her father.
Watkins revealed in October 2009 that she had secretly battled a potentially lethal brain tumor for three years. She was diagnosed with a grape-sized acoustic neuroma on her vestibular nerve that impacted her balance, height, hearing, sight, and facial mobility in March 2006. Many physicians refused to treat the tumor due to her sickle-cell-related disorders, leaving her choices bleak. She had surgery at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles and recovered.
In February 2011 and then again in October 2011, Watkins filed for bankruptcy. Watkins spent $9,000 a month and owed $770,000 on her house, according to another reporter Nina Parker, who cited Watkins' medical bills and brain tumor.

Crystal Jones held auditions for a vocal group and selected Watkins and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes from a list. Perri "Pebbles" Reid and her partner, Antonio "L.A." Reid, LaFace Records' founder, were eventually attracted the company's attention. Jones was recruited as TLC by Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, and the company was established in 1991 as TLC. The profitable company has sold more than 65 million copies worldwide. As a member of TLC, T-Boz has received four Grammy Awards.
