Career
O'Brien was born in Rusholme, England, and was educated at Trinity C.E. The High School of Honour. She began acting in 1997, The Cops in 1998, and Clocking Off in 2000. She first appeared on Coronation Street in October 1999, taking over the role of Sarah Platt from actress Lynsay King at the age of 16. At the British Soap Awards, Sarah's pregnancy with Bethany Platt received the O'Brien Best Storyline award. She has also been named Best Newcomer at the National Television Awards and the TV Quick Awards.
Her first appearance after leaving Coronation Street was in the 2007 pantomime at Manchester Opera House, where she portrayed Cinderella in the title role. In the ITV police television drama Blue Murder, filmed while four months pregnant, where she played Amy Kirkland, she was her first television appearance post-Coronation Street. O'Brien expressed an interest in doing televised dramas and theatre work, but after becoming pregnant, she decided to put her career on hold.
