Timo Tapio Tolkki (born 3 March 1966) is a Finnish musician best known as the former guitarist, songwriter, and producer of the power metal band Stratovarius.
With his service extending more than 20 years, he was the longest serving member of the band until his departure in 2008.
He formed two supergroups called Revolution Renaissance and Symfonia after leaving Stratovarius, both of which have since disbanded.
Tolkki was included in the all-time top 50 list of the world's fastest guitarists in an article published in Guitar World magazine in 2011.
Early years and Stratovarius
Tolkki began playing guitar at the age of seven and then trained diligently, often eight hours a day. His father died on the fourth floor of his apartment when he was twelve years old.
Tolkki had performed with the bands Antidote, Thunder, and Road Block before joining Stratovarius in 1984. He performed well as playing all lead and rhythm guitars, as well as playing bass guitars and bass guitars at various times during Stratovarius' career (1993-1996)). Tolkki took over vocal duties from Fourth Dimension (1995) onwards after the band's third album, Dreamspace (1994). This was mainly due to Tolkki's decision to reorient the band's overall musical direction and rely on his guitar work. After Dreamspace, including the departure of the band's remaining original members, keyboardist Antti Ikonen, and drummer Tuomo Lassila, all due to creative differences.
Tolkki's debut, Classical Variations and Themes in 1994, was one of his longtime goals. The album was similar to his time with Stratovarius, but the album was largely focused on instrumental compositions. Hymn to Life, his second solo album, showed a more personal facet of dealing with such psychological issues as his relationship with God and his late father.
In 2004, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after a nervous breakdown that occurred some months after Stratovarius was abruptly disbanded. After a period of recovery, he continued to make a complete recovery and opened Goldenworks, his own recording studio. In 2005, a final self-titled album for Stratovarius was announced, shortly after which he announced his exile from the band in 2008. He opted to renounce the name's legal rights upon leaving. This was later demonstrated as a demonstration, despite the remaining members' decision to keep the band as Stratovarius.
