Personal life
Matavy was born in Slovenia, empeter pri Gorici, Slovenia (then part of Yugoslavia). He is the nephew of football player Etien Velikonja. Matav married long-time partner Polona in June 2014. Tia (born 2012) and Ela (born 2015) are his two children, as well as one son, Val (born 2017). Matav is also fluent in Dutch, which is beside Slovene.
Club career
Matav started playing for Bilje at the age of six. In 2004, he joined the Gorica youth team. He was promoted to their senior squad in the Slovenian first division and played in a total of 30 games, scoring 11 goals in the process.
On August 30, 2007, he began a five-year deal with Groningen. He scored four goals in KNVB Cup in a match against IJsselmeervogels on September 26, 2007, but later moved to Emmen on loan and remained there until January 2009.
Matav scored his first goal in the Ecu on March 13, 2009, beating Roda 2–0. He began scoring for Groningen on a regular basis in all competitions. Matavitch, 30, 2010, has a four-year deal with the club until 2013. Matav scored his first hat-trick in the Economy on February 6, 2011 in a match against Willem II.
Matav had already signed terms with Napoli, according to Groningen sports director Hans Nijland, and he was looking forward to joining them. Nevertheless, PSV Eindhoven's Eivisie squad was already in negotiations to purchase him before the transfer window was closed. Matav's five-year deal with PSV came on August 31.
Matav returned to the Netherlands on June 29, 2017 to join Vitesse on a three-year contract.
Matav joined Al Wahda on a two-year contract on July 19, 2020.
International career
In the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier against Faroe Islands, Matav scored a hat-trick for Slovenia on October 9, 2010. He made history by becoming Slovenia's youngest player to score three goals at the age of 21.
