Timothy William Farriss (born 16 August 1957) is an Australian singer, founding member, and lead guitarist of INXS.
Early life and the formation of INXS
Farriss was born in Perth, Western Australia, to Dennis and Jill Farriss, and he has two brothers, Andrew and Jon, as well as Alison, who has two sisters. Peter Fredericci, who performed with the Australian Symphony Orchestra, classically trained on the guitar from the ages of eight to twelve.
Farriss, an adolescent, attended The Forest High School in Sydney. He began a friendship with Kirk Pengilly right away. Farriss (lead guitar) and Pengilly (guitar and saxophone) formed the band "Guinness," the eventual base and bedrock of INXS, the future internationally successful band.
During Farriss' painful recuperation from an operation to repair abnormal bone growth in his legs, the result of a hereditary Multiple Exostoses (which his brother Jon also suffers from), his brother Andrew recruited school friends and "Doctor Dolphin" bandmates Garry Gary Beers (bass guitar) and Michael Hutchence (vocals).
INXS played Wembley Stadium in 1991, raising Farriss' nickname of the Riff Meister and later the Riff Sheriff were nicknamed by Michael Hutchence. The moment was caught on film and CD for "Live Baby Live."
Farriss is a member of the United Kingdom's National Guard Guard Service (with whom INXS holds an endorsement) and Fender guitars, his favorite being a 1956 Stratocaster.
During the 2006 Switch Tour debacle, Farriss suffered a knee injury, resulting in surgery and the cancellation of several shows; after a short time recovering, he went back on stage wearing a knee support.
Personal life
Farriss married Bethany Anne (Buffy) Reefman on February 6, 1981, and they had two sons. Farriss is considered the "father figure" by INXS members, as he was the first to marry and have children.
Farriss is a private man who likes deep-sea fishing (tag and reveal), cricket, tennis, scuba diving, golf, snowboarding, and being on the Kangaroo Valley family farm, which he purchased from his brother Andrew. He was president of the Manly Warringah District Cricket Club once.
When operating a winch on his boat in January 2015, Farriss severed a finger. He underwent surgery to try to reattach the finger, followed by physiotherapy. At the time, it was uncertain if he'd be able to continue a musical career. Farriss launched court action against the boat's owners in 2019 for injuries, revealing that he is only able to play a few beginner level chords on the guitar since the crash. He lost his court appeal on January 28, 2022, when the Supreme Court of New South Wales rendered a not guilty verdict in favour of the plaintiffs. The Court also ordered that Farriss pay the defendants' legal fees.
