Thomas Vinterberg Career

Life and career

Vinterberg was born in Frederiksberg, Denmark. He graduated from the National Film School of Denmark in 1993 with Last Round (Sidste omgang), which received the jury and producers' awards at the International Film Festival in München, and First Prize at Tel Aviv.

Vinterberg produced his first television drama for DR television and his short fiction film The Boy Who Walked Backwards, which was produced by Birgitte Hald at Nimbus Film in the same year. At the 1994 Nordisk Panorama Film Festival, the International Short Film Festival in Clermont-Ferrand, and the Toronto International Film Festival, the film received awards.

The Biggest Heroes (De Strste Helte), his first feature film, received acclaim in his home country.

Vinterberg, Kristian Levring, and Snen Kragh-Jacobsen founded the Dogme 95 campaign in 1995.

Following the cannon's demise in 1998, he conceived, wrote, and produced (and also appeared in) the first of the Dogme films, The Celebration (Festen). He did not receive directorial credit because of the Dogme manifesto's laws. However, he and the film received numerous nominations and accolades, including the Jury Prize at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival.

Vinterberg was involved in the experimental television D-dag, where he and three other filmmakers produced broadcasts on four separate channels, with the viewer able to switch between them and create their own viewing experience. In 2001, the first edit was published.

He produced It's All About Love, a film he wrote, produced, and directed himself over a period of five years in 2003. The film was entirely in English and starred Joaquin Phoenix, Claire Danes, and Sean Penn, among others. The film did not do well, as critics and viewers found it idiosyncratic and partially incomprehensible.

And in his home Denmark, where it sold only 14,521 tickets, Lars von Trier's next film, the English-language Dear Wendy (2005), scripted by Lars von Trier, also failed. However, at the 27th Moscow International Film Festival, he received the Silver George for Best Director. Vinterberg then tried to trace his roots with En mand kommer hjem (2007), which also failed, selling only 31,232 tickets.

He produced "The Day That Never Comes" - the first single from Metallica's album Death Magnetic's album Death Magnetic, on August 1, 2008.

At the 60th Berlin International Film Festival, his 2010 film Submarino was nominated for the Golden Bear.

At the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, his film The Hunt premiered for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards in 2012.

Far from the Madding Crowd, a Thomas Hardy book adaptation starring Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen, and Tom Sturridge, was produced in 2015.

In Kursk, Vinterberg reunited with Matthias Schoenaerts, a documentary about the Kursk submarine tragedy of 2000.

When she and her mother were traveling home from Belgium in 2019, Vinterberg lost his daughter Ida in a car accident. As such, he dedicated Another Round (Druk) to her, while filming a large portion of the film with her classmates. The Academy Award for Best Director for the film was also given by the BAFTA Awards for Best Film Not in the English Language. He also received the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, and he dedicated the award to Ida.

He's now transitioning from drawing for television with Families Like Ours, the original six-episode series that explores a near-future Denmark in the aftermath of rising sea levels, which is eventually evacuated by the country.
