Thomas Henry Ismay (7 January 1837 – 23 November 1899) was the founder of the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, also known as the White Star Line.
Joseph Bruce Ismay, who travelled on (and survived) the first voyage of his company's ocean liner, the RMS Titanic, in 1912, was his son.
Early years
Thomas Ismay was born in a small cottage in Maryport, Cumberland, on January 7th. Joseph Ismay, Thomas's uncle, established a timber company, shipbrokers, and shipbuilder some time after Thomas' birth. He bought stakes in five vessels coming into and out of Maryport. The Ismays purchased a much bigger house in Grasslot, Maryport, when Thomas was six. Because of the three sisters Thomas' mother's death, the entire family had to move to the house. The home's name was "The Ropery," deriving from the ropes being used at the shipyard laid out in front of the house. This house was located in the shipyard of his grandfather. This was the first place he had worked. He spent the bulk of his days around the harbour. He learned more about the sea and navigation here, as well as his most common habit, chewing cigarettes, earning him the nickname "Baccy Ismay." Thomas was 12 years old when he was sent to High School in Brampton, Cumberland. This school was one of the best in Northern England. Charlotte died on July 31, 1855, aged 18.
Personal life
Ismay married Margaret, the daughter of Luke Bruce, on April 7, 1859. He obtained the White Star Line's flag and emblem in 1867. The family lived in Crosby, Australia, according to Beach Lawn.
During these years, he undertook several grand projects, including the building of a private residence in Thurston, designed by renowned architect Richard Norman Shaw in July 1882. The building, which was built using a local red sandstone, was completed in December 1884. When Ismay's widow died in 1907, it was Dawpool, and neither of his sons refused to live there. The land would have been worth more if it was blown up, according to the agent, and it was eventually sold to a Mr. Rutter who lent it to the government as a hospital during World War I. It was sold to Sir Henry Roberts in 1926, but it was demolished a year later.
Shipping career
Ismay left school and began as an apprentice with shipbrokers Imrie and Tomlinson of Liverpool at the age of 16. He wanted to get some experience on the high seas after finishing his apprenticeship. He founded a company in England as he returned to England. He collaborated with Philip Nelson, who was also a man from Maryport and a father of his uncle. However, the relationship was not long; Nelson, a former sea captain, believed in old, reliable wooden ships, while Ismay believed in iron ships. The White Star Line's flag was introduced in 1867 in Ismay.
Ismay had always been interested in the Asiatic Steam Navigation Company and wanted to see how it was operated, so he and Gustav Wolff, the founder of Harland & Wolff, decided to fly to India on board an ANSC steamer. This was partially to see how their rival was run and part of a family holiday. They left Dawpool and travelled by train through Europe on October 26, 1887, seeing the sights of France, Switzerland, and Italy along the way. As they arrived in Italy, they boarded the SS Nizam, heading for Alexandria. The pair visited the Pyramids and cruised on the Nile in Egypt.
Around 1870, Ismay initiated a new series of rules and regulations for his brand's latest trend-setting steamers, RMS Oceanic (1870), RMS Atlantic, and the RMS Baltic (1871). SS Atlantic struck rocks and sank off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, killing at least 535 people in 1873. It was the biggest loss for the White Star Line until the Titanic's demise in 1912.
Ismay, president of White Star Line from 1863 to 1899, had many ships under his command. The bulk of these ships were chartered before 1870, and the majority of White Star Line's vessels were chartered from more prominent/wealthy shipping lines, so the firm could not be held entirely accountable if someone died on board.
