Thiago Motta Career

Club career

Motta joined FC Barcelona in 1999 from So Paulo's Clube Atlético Juventus, where the club's B-side was first introduced to the club's B-side. He made his first appearance against RCD Mallorca in a 3–0 home win on October 3rd.

Motta appeared in seven appearances and aided his team in the UEFA Champions League's 2001-02 season, winning the semi-finals. In 2002–03's La Liga, he played in a career-best 21 games (with three goals) as Barça's season-long UEFA Cup run came to an end; he was dismissed in the first leg, which was also on aggregate, after striking out at opposing goalkeeper Robert Douglas, who was also shown the red card in a game in Glasgow (0–1 on aggregate).

During his time in Barcelona, Motta was also dogged by several injuries, particularly one against Sevilla FC on September 11, 2004, which sidelined him for seven months. He'll need surgery to restore his anterior cruciate and lateral ligaments in his left knee, but he was able to recover quickly and made a triumphant comeback by defeating Getafe 2–0 on April 17th.

Motta started a one-year deal with Atlético Madrid in late August 2007 for an undisclosed fee. He started the season on the sidelines, injured; in the Copa del Rey quarter-final match against Valencia CF, he was ejected after just 25 minutes; the Colchoneros lost the away match 0–1 and later the tie.

Motta's chances increased due to injuries to regular starter Ral Garca and Maniche's departure in January 2008. The recurrent knee injuries resurfaced in March, and his season was over, followed by a fruitful surgery and rehabilitation in the United States; he tried to play for Portsmouth after his release but did not sign up for them.

After passing a medical, Motta joined Genoa on a free transfer in September 2008. He did well and was a regular in the starting eleven under coach Gian Piero Gasperini's leadership during his debut campaign.

In a final 3–2 home win over Juventus FC on April 11, 2009, Motta scored two goals (one of them in the first half's injury time) and a single goal in the first half. He finished the year with a career-best six goals and his team qualified for the Europa League.

La Gazzetta dello Sport announced on May 20 that Motta and his colleague Diego Milito have joined Inter Milan, who paid €28 million for the former and €10.2 million for the former, although Genoa received five Inter players: Robert Acquafresca, Francesco Bolzoni, Leonardo Bonucci, Ivan Fati, and Riccardo Meggiorini. Dario Canovi, Motta's rep, later revealed that his Genoa deal included a buy-out fee of €10 million.

Motta's debut in 2009–10's opener, a 1–1 home draw against A.S. Bari, was his first goal in the Derby della Madonnina, after an assist by Milito in the 4–0 loss of A.C. Milan. In a 3–0 victory over Bologna F.C., he had been in and out of the squad for the duration of the season. On April 3, 1909, Germany.

During Motta's empirious Champions League campaign, the club also appeared in eight games, including the 0–1 loss at former Barcelona in the semi-finals (3–2 aggregate victory). He was dismissed after reportedly striking Sergio Busquets in the chest with his hand; the situation attracted notice due to Busquets' apparent feigning of injury.

Motta won by a header against A.C. ChievoVerona, Inter's first at home in 2011–12.

Despite Inter manager Claudio Ranieri's adamant words to the upcoming league match against United States Città di Palermo, Motta joined the club on January 31 in 2012. A fee is believed to be around €10 million in France for a service. Following his transfer, he admitted that he dreamt of playing for the team again after fellow Brazilians such as Ra, Leonardo, and Ronaldinho shone in the French capital; he also stated that he was not happy at Inter; instead, refusing to elaborate on his reasons for leaving Inter.

Motta made his PSG debut against Evian in a 3–1 home win after signing four days earlier in the season, after being booked in the process. In another home game, he scored his first goal in Ligue 1, giving FC Sochaux-Montbéliard a 6–1 victory.

Motta, a 31-year-old man, signed his deal until June 2016. He was left with a broken nose after being headbutted by SC Bastia's Brando in the tunnel as his opponent went on to be banned for six months in August.

On May 8, Motta announced his retirement at the end of the season, while also being named as the new head coach of PSG's under-19 team. He played 232 competitive matches and won 19 trophies during his six-and-a-half years with the Parc des Princes, winning 19 trophies, including his final match against Stade Malherbe Caen on May 19th.

International career

In the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Motta made his Brazilian debut in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Despite being a member of the Under-23 team, FIFA fully acknowledged his achievement; he continued to play in two more games in the tournament; and in 1998, the South American Under-17 Football Championship was held in the country.

Motta missed the 2004 CONMEBOL Men Pre-Olympic Tournament due to sickness, but he did play for the under-23 team against Santos FC in November 2003. Subsequently, there were allegations that he wanted to be called up to Italy and perhaps even to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, as he had dual nationality – his paternal grandfather being Italian – being Italian. Fortunato Fogagnolo, his great-grandfather, left Polesella in South America in the early 1900s. Players were allowed to change their representing country if they had dual nationality, but not for players who have already played in a competitive "A" match (non-friendly).

Motta's first call-up from Italy for a friendly against Germany on February 6, 2011, but the Italian Football Federation's official statement said it was subject to FIFA clearance, which was delayed two days later. He made his debut in the match, but Alberto Aquilani replaced him in the 63rd minute of the 1–1 draw.

Motta scored the game's only goal after a 73rd-minute match with Federico Balzaretti on March 25, 2011, his second international, a UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier in Slovenia. He was selected to the finals in Poland and Ukraine, beginning in three group stage matches against Poland and Ukraine, before losing by a single player as he was the third and last allowable player brought in by boss Cesare Prandelli in the 55th minute.

On May 13, Motta was selected in a 30-man provisional squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and also made the final list. In the 57th minute of England's 2–1 group stage victory over England, he played his first-ever game in the tournament at the age of 32.

Motta was named in Antonio Conte's 23-man Italy squad for Euro 2016 and was given the number 10 shirt on May 31. The decision to assign him that number caused controversies, but Daniele De Rossi, an international teammate, later defended the manager's decision, saying: "Those who have joked about it just don't know much about football." With Thiago Motta, you should play the ball for a while, and then you will rinse your mouth out. He may not be a No. 1 in a field of No. 2s. [Roberto] Baggio [Francesco] Totti, a tenacious person, but he's still a master." After being refused for the second time in the tournament against Spain in the previous round, he was banned for the quarter-final match against Germany.

Managerial career

Following Motta's release from professional football in May 2018, he became Paris Saint-Germain's under-19 coach. He said in an interview with La Gazetta dello Sport in November of that year that he wanted to revolutionize football with a 4–3–3 squad that could be read as a 2–7–2, a former champion of the sport.

Motta joined the Centro Tecnico Federale di Coverciano in August 2019 for the UEFA Pro Licence Courses; he obtained his license on September 16, 2020.

Genoa's former Roma coach, who was then occupying the second-last position in the Italian top tier, announced his appointment as the new head on October 21st, replacing Aurelio Andreazzoli, who was recently fired. He led the team to come from behind and win a 3–1 home victory over Brescia in his first official match in charge, five days later. However, he was fired on December 28th, with the team in last place.

Following Motta's departure to Fiorentina, Motta was named head coach of Serie A team Spezia on July 5th, 2021. Despite a slow start to season that almost led to the club's dismissal of him by December, Motta turned Spezia's fortunes by January and was also given the Serie A Coach of the Month award after three consecutive victories, with a team widely predicted for relegation due to an imminent transfer market ban.

Motta was able to keep Spezia off relegation for the second season in a row on May 15th, 2022, with still a game remaining. Motta left Spezia by mutual consent on June 28, 2022.
